2013 El Paso Mayoral Election
The 2013 El Paso mayoral election was held on May 11 and June 8, 2013, to elect the Mayor of El Paso, Texas. Incumbent Mayor John Cook could not seek another term due to term limits. In the nonpartisan preliminary round was held on May 11, 2013, businessman Oscar Leeser and City Councilman Steve Ortega placed first and second with 47% and 21% of the vote, respectively, and because no candidate received a majority, a runoff election was held on June 15. John F. Cook (born February 27, 1946) is an American businessman, veteran, civic leader, and member of the Paso Del Norte Group. Cook was Mayor of El Paso, Texas for two terms from 2005 to 2013. Due to the City Charter's term limits clause Cook was not eligible for a third term in 2013. Life and career Cook graduated from New York City's Immaculata High School in 1964. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and earned a degree in business in 1977. In 1970, Cook married his wife Tram Cook, with whom he has six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cook has lived for most of his life in Northeast El Paso, where his family has owned and operated several businesses. He served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970, seeing service as a special agent in military intelligence. El Paso County is the westernmost county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 865,657, making it the ninth-most populous county in the state of Texas. Anthony Cobos is a politician from the State of Texas in the United States. He served as the El Paso County Judge from 2007–2011 and is a former member of the El Paso City Council. El Paso County, Texas is located on the border of the United States and Mexico. Cobos was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of a public corruptions probe in 2007, was arrested by the FBI on December 16, 2011, charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, deprivation of honest services, and pleaded guilty to corruption charges on September 3, 2013.
