Comics
a medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information. It typically the form of a sequence of panels of images. Textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia can indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. There is no consensus amongst theorists and historians on a definition of comics; some emphasize the combination of images and text, some sequentiality or other image relations, and others historical aspects such as mass reproduction or the use of recurring characters. Cartooning and other forms of illustration are the most common image-making means in comics; '' fumetti'' is a form that uses photographic images. Common forms include comic strips, editorial and gag cartoons, and comic books. Dana Simpson
Dana Claire Simpson is an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of the comic ''Phoebe and her Unicorn'', as well as the long-running webcomic Ozy and Millie. Other works created by Simpson include the political commentary cartoon ''I Drew This'' and the alternate reality drama comic ''Raine Dog''. Biography Simpson was born in Pullman, Washington, and then lived in the Seattle area for most of her life. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College. Simpson considered herself an artist from an early age, drawing comic strips as young as five years old as part of making her own homemade newspaper. As she grew up, she began drawing inspiration from ''Peanuts'', ''The Simpsons'' and ''Pogo (comic strip), Pogo''. In her 20s, she came out as transgender. Kei Sanbe
is a Japanese manga artist born in Tomakomai, Hokkaido and raised in Chiba Prefecture. He has formerly worked under the pseudonym . He is married to illustrator . Sanbe was an honorable mention in the 1990 40th Tezuka Award and a semi-final winner in the 41st iteration. His manga, '' Erased'', was nominated for the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Reader Award. History After graduating from high school, Sanbe moved to Tokyo to study background art production at the Tokyo Designer Gakuin College. Moerbeke-Waas
Moerbeke () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in the Belgium, Belgian province of East Flanders. It is sometimes unofficially called Moerbeke-Waas () to distinguish between this place and in Geraardsbergen. The municipality comprises the town of Moerbeke proper, and part of the Dutch-Belgian village Koewacht. In 2021, Moerbeke had a total population of 6,619. The total area is 37.80 km². Moerbeke was known very well for its sugar refinery. It is thought to have been the hometown of William of Moerbeke, who as Bishop of Corinth produced a new translation into Latin of the works of Aristotle, including certain which had been rediscovered from Arab sources, in the late 13th century. Meneer Pheip is a Flemish comic book character from the Belgian comic strip ''The Adventures of Nero'' by Marc Sleen. In the series he is part of Nero (comic book character), Nero's personal circle of friends, despite often being up in arms with him. He is the husband of Madam Pheip, father of Clo-Clo and adoptive father of Petoetje and Petatje. Meneer Pheip's most notable character trait is the fact that he speaks French (language), French. Character Meneer Pheip is an obese, middle-aged man with a large moustache. He is very stingy, chauvinistic and prone to aggression. He frequently quarrels with Nero (comic book character), Nero and gets into fights with Abraham Tuizentfloot. Pheip isn't very bright either. ''Life in Hell'' is a comic strip by Matt Groening, creator of ''The Simpsons'', ''Futurama'', and ''Disenchantment'', which was published weekly from 1977 to 2012. The strip features anthropomorphic rabbits and a gay couple. The comic covers a wide range of subjects, such as love, sex, work, and death, and explores themes of angst, social alienation, self-loathing, and fear of inevitable doom. History ''Life in Hell'' started in 1977 as a self-published comic book Groening used to describe life in Los Angeles to his friends. Matt Groening
Matthew Abram Groening ( ; born February 15, 1954) is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator. He is the creator of the comic strip ''Life in Hell'' (1977–2012) and the television series ''The Simpsons'' (1989–present), ''Futurama'' (1999–2003, 2008–2013, 2023–onwards), and ''Disenchantment'' (2018–present). ''The Simpsons'' is the longest-running U.S. primetime-television series in history and the longest-running U.S. animated series and sitcom. Groening made his first professional cartoon sale of ''Life in Hell'' to the avant-garde magazine ''Wet'' in 1978. At its peak, the cartoon was carried in 250 weekly newspapers. Incorruptible
''Incorruptible'' is an American comic book series written by Mark Waid and published by Boom! Studios. The series follows former supervillain Max Damage in his quest to become a superhero. The book is a spin-off of another Waid comic, ''Irredeemable'', which follows the transformation of a superhero into a supervillain. ''Incorruptible'' #1 was published on December 16, 2009, and the series ended in May 2012, after thirty issues. Marcio Takara is the longest-serving artist on the series, having provided art for sixteen issues since ''Incorruptible #11'' in October 2010. The series concluded alongside ''Irredeemable'' in May 2012. ''Irredeemable'' is an American comic book series written by Mark Waid, drawn by Peter Krause and Diego Barreto, and published by Boom! Studios. The series follows the fall of the world's greatest superhero, the Plutonian, as he begins slaughtering the population of Earth. His former allies, the superhero group The Paradigm, attempt to find a way to stop his rampage while dealing with their own feelings of betrayal and hopelessness. ''Irredeemable'' #1 premiered in April 2009, and the series ended in May 2012, after thirty-seven issues and one special. Peter Krause was the artist for the first twenty-four issues, after which Diego Barretto took over as artist. A spin-off, ''Incorruptible'', was released in December 2009, which follows one of the Plutonian's greatest enemies, Max Damage, on his journey to become a superhero in the wake of Plutonian's fall. Mark Waid (; born March 21, 1962) is an American comic book writer best known for his work on DC Comics titles ''The Flash'', '' Kingdom Come'' and '' Superman: Birthright'' as well as his work on ''Captain America'', ''Fantastic Four'' and '' Daredevil'' for Marvel. From August 2007 to December 2010, Waid served as Editor-in-Chief and later Chief Creative Officer of Boom! Studios, where he also published his creator-owned series ''Irredeemable'' and ''Incorruptible''. In October 2018, Waid joined Humanoids Publishing as Director of Creative Development before being promoted to Publisher in February 2020. ''The Free Lance–Star'' is the principal daily newspaper distributed throughout Fredericksburg, Virginia, United States, with a circulation area including the city of Fredericksburg and all or parts of the counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, Culpeper, Fauquier, Louisa, Orange, Prince William and Westmoreland. ''The Free Lance'' was first published on January 27, 1885, when Col. John W. Woltz and William E. Bill Rechin
William J. Rechin (August 20, 1930 – May 21, 2011), better known as Bill Rechin, was an American cartoonist who created the comic strips ''Out of Bounds'' and '' Crock''. Born in Buffalo, New York, Rechin studied art at Buffalo's Albright Academy of Art, where he met his wife, Trish. He drew his first strip, ''Pluribus'', in 1971. In 1975, Rechin, Don Wilder (1934–2008) and Brant Parker launched '' Crock'', a strip depicting the French Foreign Legion. Wilder and Rechin began their ''Out of Bounds'' strip in 1986. Rechin lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia with his wife. The couple had seven children and eight grandchildren. He died of esophageal cancer on May 21, 2011.
