2012 Hougang By-election
A by-election for the Hougang Single Member Constituency in Singapore was held on 26 May 2012 with Png Eng Huat from the Worker's Party as the winning candidate. This followed due to the expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong from the Worker's Party on 15 February 2012, which he decided not to appeal. On 22 February 2012, the Speaker Michael Palmer declared the seat vacant, effective from the date of expulsion, as required by the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. This was the 16th by-election since the first election, and the first by-election after over 19 years since 1992. This was the first by-election in Singapore since the new millennium and the 21st Century. Nomination day was held on 16 May 2012, while polling day was on 26 May 2012. 23,368 people were eligible to vote. Png Eng Huat (; born 9 December 1961) is a Singaporean politician and businessman. A member of the opposition Worker's Party (WP), he was the Member of Parliament for Hougang SMC between 2012 and 2020. Although he stepped down as an MP for Hougang SMC prior to the 2020 general election, he still remains active in politics. Career After completing his university studies, Png worked for various organisations including Philips Singapore and NTUC Income, before setting up some of his own businesses. Political career Png joined the Workers' Party in 2006. At the 2011 general election, Png stood in a five-member Worker's Party team in the East Coast GRC. The Party was defeated by the governing People's Action Party (PAP) by 49,429 votes (45.2%) to 59,992 (54.8%). Sylvia Lim
Sylvia Lim Swee Lian (; born 1965) is a Singaporean politician, lawyer, former police officer and lecturer who has been serving as Chairwoman of the Worker's Party since 2003. She has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Paya Lebar division of Aljunied GRC since 2020. Before entering politics, Lim had served in the Singapore Police Force and worked in Temasek Polytechnic as a law lecturer. One week after the 2011 general election, she announced that she would be resigning from her job at Temasek Polytechnic after 12 years of service by what she anticipated to be an increased workload after being elected as part of the Workers' Party team for Aljunied GRC. Chee Soon Juan
Chee Soon Juan is a Singaporean politician, activist and former lecturer who has been serving as Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party since 1993. Prior to entering politics in 1992, upon Chiam See Tong's invitation to join the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Chee was a lecturer at the National University of Singapore. Chee subsequently succeeded Chiam as the party's secretary-general after Chiam, whom Chee and the rest of the party's leadership have had a number of disagreements, left the party. A by-election for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in Singapore was held on 19 December 1992. The People's Action Party (PAP) defeated the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), the Singapore Justice Party (SJP) and the National Solidarity Party (NSP) with 72.9% of the valid votes. The team of candidates from the People's Action Party (PAP) were subsequently declared as the MPs for Marine Parade GRC. ''Nanyang Sin-Chew Lianhe Zaobao'' (; literally "Nanyang Sin-Chew Joint Morning Paper"), commonly abbreviated as ''Lianhe Zaobao'' (; literally "Joint Morning Paper"), is the largest Singaporean Chinese-language newspaper with a daily circulation of about 136,900 (print and digital) as of 2021. Ho Kah Leong
Ho Kah Leong ( zh, c=何家良, p=Hé Jiāliáng; born 1937) is a former Singaporean politician and was a member of the People's Action Party (PAP). He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong Single Member Constituency (SMC) from 1966 to 1997. After retirement from politics in December 1996, he became the principal of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) from 1997 to 2003, and Executive director of NAFA International Pte Ltd from 2003 to 2005. Education Ho studied at Sin Sheng School and then Chung Cheng High School. He went on to study at NAFA from 1955 to 1956 before obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from Nanyang University in 1963. Low Thia Khiang
Low Thia Khiang (; born 5 September 1956) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Secretary-General of the Workers' Party (WP) between 2001 and 2018. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC between 1991 and 2011 and Aljunied GRC between 2011 and 2020. He was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament. The Aljunied Group Representation Constituency is a five-member group representation constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern and eastern region of Singapore. The GRC consists of five divisions: Eunos, Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, Kaki Bukit, Serangoon and Paya Lebar. The current MPs are Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, Gerald Giam, Leon Perera and Muhamad Faisal Manap from the Worker's Party (WP). Khaw Boon Wan
Khaw Boon Wan (; born 8 December 1952) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Minister for Transport between 2015 and 2020, Minister for National Development between 2011 and 2015, and Minister for Health between 2003 and 2011.
