2012 Gwynedd Council Election
The 2012 Gwynedd County Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Gwynedd Council in Wales. Seventy four council seats were up for re-election, however, no candidates were nominated for the Bryncrug/Llanfihangel ward, and a by-election was held in June 2012. The Gwynedd election was on the same day as other 2012 United Kingdom local elections. Results The council shifted from Plaid Cymru majority to No Overall Control (Plaid had taken control of the council between elections). With no candidates nominated for the Bryncrug/Llanfihangel ward, a by-election was held in June 2012 and the outcome could have led to a Plaid majority had the Plaid candidate won. However, an independent won. Cyngor Gwynedd ( en, Gwynedd Council) is the governing body for the county of Gwynedd, one of the principal areas of Wales. The council administrates internally using the Welsh language. History The county of Gwynedd was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, covering the area of the abolished administrative counties of Anglesey, Caernarfonshire, most of Merioneth, and a small part of Denbighshire. The new county created in 1974 was named "Gwynedd" after the medieval Kingdom of Gwynedd which had covered the area until its division into counties under the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284, following the Conquest of Wales by Edward I. Gwynedd Council in North Wales is elected, as a whole, every 4 years. In 2014 the National Assembly for Wales deferred all local elections in Wales to 2017. The council is composed of 74 councillors.
