2012 Gent–Wevelgem
The 2012 Gent–Wevelgem was the 74th running of the Gent–Wevelgem single-day cycling race. It was held on 25 March 2012 over a distance of , and was the seventh race of the 2012 UCI World Tour season. In a mass sprint finish, the race was won by rider Tom Boonen, who in the process, became the fifth different rider to win the race three times. Boonen finished ahead of 's Peter Sagan and 's Matti Breschel, who completed the podium. Teams As Gent–Wevelgem was a UCI World Tour event, all 18 UCI ProTeams were invited automatically and obligated to send a squad. Seven other squads were given wildcard places into the race, and as such, formed the event's 25-team peloton. Each team could enter up to eight riders, with the starting peloton being 195 riders. 2012 UCI World Tour
The 2012 UCI World Tour was the fourth edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the Tour Down Under's opening stage on 17 January, and consisted of 14 stage races, 14 one-day races, and one team time trial (which only counted towards the team rankings). The Tour of Hangzhou which was originally included in the list of races was postponed until 2013. __TOC__ Teams The 18 UCI ProTeams competed in the World Tour, with UCI Professional Continental teams, or national squads, able to enter at the discretion of the organisers of each event. Daniele Bennati
Daniele Bennati (born 24 September 1980) is an Italian former road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2002 and 2019 for the , , , , , , and squads. Specialising in fast sprint finishes, Bennati turned professional in 2002, when he joined the team and wore zebra stripes as part of Mario Cipollini's leadout train. Upon joining the team in 2005, he demonstrated the ability to win on his own, and continued to do so when he joined in 2008. Bennati has won 11 stages in Grand Tours: two in the Tour de France, three in the Giro d'Italia, and six in the Vuelta a España. He won the points jersey in the 2007 Vuelta a España, and the Giro d'Italia. He retired at the end of the 2019 season, citing back pain. Kirsten Wild
Kirsten Carlijn Wild (born 15 October 1982) is a Dutch former professional racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2004 and 2021, for eight professional teams. During her track cycling career, Wild rode at the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, 2016 and 2020, winning a bronze medal at the latter Games, in the omnium. She won eighteen medals including nine golds at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, and eighteen medals including eight golds at the UEC European Track Championships. Wild also took over 100 victories in road racing, and won two medals at the UCI Road World Championships. Iris Slappendel (born 18 February 1985) is a Dutch former road racing cyclist. Career She won the 2012 Open de Suède Vårgårda road race, the penultimate event in the 2012 UCI Women's Road World Cup. Slappendel took a total of five UCI race victories in her career, including the GP Comune di Cornaredo and stages of the Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen, the Ster Zeeuwsche Eilanden and La Route de France. In September 2014 Slappendel announced that she would join the for the 2015 season. After one season she moved to , racing mainly in North America. In September 2016 she announced her retirement from professional competition, having won her final race, the Gateway Cup, earlier that month. History and profile In 1929, ''Het Nieuwsblad'' was published by ''De Standaard'' for the first time. Elizabeth Mary Deignan (née Armitstead; born 18 December 1988) is an English professional world champion track and road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . Giovanni Visconti (born 13 January 1983) is an Italian professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI ProTeam . Professional career Early career Born in Turin, Visconti won his first race in 2006 at the Coppa Sabatini. One year later, he won the Italian National Road Race Championships on 1 July 2007, beating Paolo Bossoni () and Davide Rebellin () at the end in a sprint. Filippo "Pippo" Pozzato (born 10 September 1981) is an Italian former road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2000 and 2018 for the , , , , , , and two spells with the / teams.
