2012 CIS Women's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 2012 CIS Women's Ice Hockey Championship was held March 8 to March 11, 2012, in Edmonton, Alberta, to determine a national champion for the 2011–12 women's ice hockey season. The tournament was played at Clare Drake Arena and was hosted by the University of Alberta for the first time in school history. The third-seeded Calgary Dinos won the first gold medal in program history by defeating the sixth-seeded Montréal Carabins by a score of 5–1 in the gold medal game. Seedings Six CIS teams qualified for the tournament and were divided into two pools to play a round-robin tournament to determine the two teams who would play in the championship game. U Sports Women's Ice Hockey
U Sports women's ice hockey is the highest level of play of women's ice hockey at the university level under the auspices of U Sports, Canada's governing body for university sports. Women's ice hockey has been played in U Sports since the 1997-98 season, when the governing body was known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union, following a long stint of teams only competing in the Ontario University Athletics, OUA. There are 35 teams, all of which are based in Canada, that are divided into four conferences that are eligible to compete for the year-end championship. As these players compete at the university level, they are obligated to follow the rule of standard eligibility of five years. Canada West Universities Athletic Association
Canada West is a regional membership association for universities in Western Canada which assists in co-ordinating competition between their university level athletic programs and providing contact information, schedules, results, and releases about those programs and events to the public and the media. This is similar to what would be called a college athletic conference in the United States. UPEI Panthers
The UPEI Panthers are the men's and women's athletic teams that represent the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The UPEI Panthers have teams playing in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference of the U Sports, including men's and women's ice hockey, soccer, basketball, cross country running as well as women's rugby. The McGill Redbirds (formerly the McGill Redmen) and McGill Martlets are the varsity athletic teams that represent McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Team name According to Suzanne Morton, a professor of history at McGill, the name "McGill Redmen" was first adopted in 1927, initially intended to reflect James McGill's Scottish heritage and hair color. Despite this, after the hiring of a new football coach from the United States sometime before 1940, Indigenous imagery was brought in to accompany the name as a show of spectacle. Hayley Wickenheiser
Hayley Wickenheiser (born August 12, 1978) is a Canadian former ice hockey player, resident physician and assistant general manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs. She was the first woman to play full-time professional men’s hockey in a position other than goalie. Wickenheiser was a member of Canada women's national ice hockey team for 23 years, from 1994 until announcing her retirement on January 13, 2017, and is the team's career points leader with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games. Leslie Oles
Leslie Oles (born 18 November 1990 in Beaconsfield, Quebec) is a Canadian ice hockey player. She started played a professional hockey when she was 17, helping the player-run Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) start up. She was elected to the all-star team and in her second season helped the Montreal Stars win the Clarkson Cup. She later joined the interuniversity league while studying physical education at McGill University. She was a member of Canada's Under-18 Team and won a silver medal at the 2008 world championships. Kim Deschênes (born August 7, 1991) is a Canadian ice hockey player, currently signed with the Montreal Force of the Premier Hockey Federation. She played five seasons with the Canadiennes de Montreal of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL), until the league ceased operations in 2019. Alberta Pandas Women's Ice Hockey
The Alberta Pandas ice hockey team represents the University of Alberta in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association of U Sports. Since joining U Sports (then called the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union, followed by Canadian Interuniversity Sport in 2001) in 1997, the women's ice hockey team has been led by head coach Howie Draper. The program has won the most Canada West conference championships with 14 and the most U Sports national championships with eight.
