2012 Bridgend County Borough Council Election

The 2012 Bridgend Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Bridgend County Borough Council in Wales. This was the same day as other 2012 United Kingdom local elections. Result With a 34.99% turnout of the electorate, the Labour Party won an additional 12 seats. This gave the Labour Group an overall majority, which they had not had for the previous eight years. However, Labour's council cabinet member, Alana Davies, lost her seat (Porthcawl East) to an Independent candidate. The Conservatives retained only the Newton seat, losing five councillors. Five out of the fifty four seats were elected unopposed. Bridgend County Borough Council
Bridgend County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History Bridgend County Borough and Bridgend County Borough Council came into effect from 1 April 1996, following the ''Local Government (Wales) Act 1994''. Bridgend County Borough Council largely replaced Ogwr Borough Council, though St Brides Major, Ewenny and Wick were transferred from Ogwr to the Vale of Glamorgan. In November 2014 the council voted to propose a merger with the neighbouring Vale of Glamorgan Council, though this was rejected by the Welsh Government's Public Services Minister, Leighton Andrews, as not meeting the criteria to be able to proceed. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. Porthcawl
Porthcawl (, ) is a town and community on the south coast of Wales in the county borough of Bridgend, west of the capital city, Cardiff and southeast of Swansea. Historically part of Glamorgan and situated on a low limestone headland on the South Wales coast, overlooking the Bristol Channel, Porthcawl developed as a coal port during the 19th century, but its trade was soon taken over by more rapidly developing ports such as Barry. Northwest of the town, in the dunes known as Kenfig Burrows, are hidden the last remnants of the town and Kenfig Castle, which were overwhelmed by sand about 1400. Toponymy is a common Welsh element meaning "harbour" and the ' here refers to "sea kale", which must have grown in profusion or even been collected here. Local folk etymology holds the ''cawl'' to be a corruption of ''Gaul'', and that the area was an ancient landing point for Gaulish and Breton, or later Frankish and Norman knights. Newton, Bridgend
Newton ( cy, Drenewydd yn Notais) is a village located near the seaside resort town of Porthcawl, in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. History and amenities Newton village dates from the 12th century and St John the Baptist Church was founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem 800 years ago and originally built as a fortress, still overlooks the village green. The Jolly Sailor pub, the oldest in Porthcawl, and the Ancient Briton pub also overlook the green. 130 metres to the south of the church lies St. John's water well, the water from which is reputed to have healing properties. Newton Beach is a long sandy beach, approximately 3 miles long, stretching from Newton Point in the west to the mouth of the River Ogmore in the east. 2012 Welsh Local Elections
The 2012 Welsh local elections took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They were held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The previous elections were held in 2008. The Labour Party made gains at the expense of the other three major parties and of independents. Labour won majority control of ten councils—up eight from the 2008 local elections—while two remained under the control of independents and nine councils had no overall control. The Welsh Government announced that elections for Anglesey council would be postponed to May 2013.
