2011–12 División De Honor Femenina De Balonmano
The División de Honor Femenina 2011–12 was the 55th season of women's handball top flight in Spain since its establishment. Season began 10 September 2011 and finished 12 May 2012. Fourteen teams took part in the competition, with BM Gijón, CB Kukullaga and CB Porriño replacing CP Goya Almería, CBF Monóvar and AD Sagardía. SD Itxako won every match but one to lift its fourth championship in a row with a 5 points advantage over runner-up BM Bera Bera, which also qualified for the Champions League. BM Sagunto, BM Alcobendas and CB Mar Alicante followed in European positions while newly promoted Gijón and Kukullaga were relegated as the two bottom teams. Financial strain led to major changes following the end of the season. 4-times champion CBF Elda asked to be relegated to the third tier on 18 June, Itxako renounced to its place in the Champions League three days later, and Mar Alicante also renounced to its European place on 9 July. División de Honor Femenina de Balonmano or Liga Guerreras Iberdrola after sponsorship of Iberdrola, is the premier women's professional handball league in Spain. It is administered by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM). It was established in 1952, and it is currently contested by twelve teams. The 4 last ranked teams are relegated to División de Honor Oro Femenina, league newly created for the 2022-2023 season. For a long time, the 2nd level of the spanish women's handball pyramid was División de Plata (the 3rd level as of now). Super Amara Bera Bera is the defending champion. Club Balonmano Sagunto was a Spanish women's handball club from Sagunto founded in 1978 which in July, 2012 moved to Valencia and joint CE Handbol Marítim to play in División de Honor as Valencia Aicequip. History Mar Valencia was founded in 1963 as Sección Femenina's women's handball team in Valencia (Medina Valencia) before becoming an independent club in 1978 as Íber Valencia. In 1993 it again changed its official name, taking the aforementioned one. It was also known as El Osito L'Eliana and Milar L'Eliana in subsequent years for sponsorship reasons, having moved to L'Eliana. The Women's EHF Champions League is the competition for the top women's handball clubs in Europe, organised annually by the European Handball Federation (EHF). It is the most prestigious tournament for clubs, with the champions of Europe's top national leagues participating. Tournament structure Each year, the EHF publishes a ranking list of its member federations. The first 27 nations are allowed to participate in the tournament with their national champion.
