2011–12 Ayr United F.C. Season
The 2011–12 season was Ayr United's first season back in the Scottish First Division, having been promoted from the Scottish Second Division at the end of the 2010–11 season. Ayr also competed in the Challenge Cup, League Cup and the Scottish Cup. Summary Ayr United finished ninth in the First Division, entering the play-offs losing 3–1 to Airdrie United on aggregate in the Semi-final and were relegated to the Second Division. Ayr United F
Ayr (; sco, Ayr; gd, Inbhir Àir, "Mouth of the River Ayr") is a town situated on the southwest coast of Scotland. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire council area and the historic county town of Ayrshire. With a population of 46,982 Ayr is the 15th largest settlement in Scotland and largest town in Ayrshire by population. The town is contiguous with the smaller town of Prestwick to the north. Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205 and is the county town of Ayrshire. It served as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the Medieval Period and was a well-known port during the Early Modern Period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sits the ramparts of a citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell's men during the mid-17th century. Steven McLean (referee)
Steven McLean (born 1 April 1981) is a Scottish football referee. He became a FIFA referee in 2010 and was selected to officiate at the 2011 UEFA U17 European Championship. In October 2011 McLean was in charge of a 2013 European Under-21 qualifier involving Spain and Croatia. In January 2012 McLean was the referee for a Scottish League Cup semi-final - an Ayrshire derby between Kilmarnock and Ayr United, won by the former who went on to lift the trophy. In March 2014 McLean refereed his first major national final, the 2014 Scottish League Cup Final between Aberdeen and Inverness Caledonian Thistle which Aberdeen won in a penalty shoot-out. However at the end of the league season he angered Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes by failing to award a foul in the last minute of their match with Motherwell, permitting Motherwell to score the winning goal and thereby overtake Aberdeen in the standings. Roddy Paterson (born 23 June 1993) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays for Petershill F.C. as a forward Career Ayr United Paterson signed for Ayr United on the 21 October 2009. On 24 July 2010, he made his first team debut as a substitute in the Challenge Cup with his Scottish Second Division debut coming on 7 August 2010 against Brechin City at Somerset Park. In all he made four appearances in his debut season. A regular scorer for Ayr's reserves he scored his first professional goal in his first start on 9 August 2011, a 3–0 win over Raith Rovers in the Challenge Cup. Following Ayr's promotion he made his Scottish First Division debut as a substitute against Queen of the South on 24 September in a 1–0 win. The Scottish League Cup (also known as the Viaplay Cup for sponsorship reasons) is a football competition open to all Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) clubs. First held in 1946–47, it is the oldest national League Cup in existence. The competition had a straight knockout format but became a group and knockout competition from 2016–17. The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL was the top level of football in Scotland. 2012–13 Scottish Second Division
The 2012–13 Scottish Football League Second Division (also known as the 2012–13 Irn Bru Scottish Football League Second Division for sponsorship reasons) was the 18th season in the current format of 10 teams in the third-tier of Scottish football. Cowdenbeath were the current champions. Teams Two sides were promoted from the 2011–12 competition. Cowdenbeath as champions, and Dumbarton as winners of the promotion play-offs. They were replaced by Queen of the South, who finished bottom of the First Division, and Ayr United, who were relegated through the first division play-offs.
