2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships
The 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships was held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan from September 22 to October 10, 2011. The competition ran under the supervision of the world's governing body for amateur boxing, the AIBA, and followed on from the biggest World Championships in AIBA history which was held in Milan, Italy in 2009. This world championship served as a qualifier for the 2012 Summer Olympics. 685 boxers participated from 127 countries. The preliminary rounds started on September 26 with the finals being held on October 10. Samir El-Mais (born 10 September 1980), nicknamed "Sweet Sammy", is an Abu Dhabi-born Canadian heavyweight boxer from Windsor, Ontario. Yamil Alberto Peralta Jara (born July 16, 1991 in Tres de Febrero, Buenos Aires Province) is an Argentinian boxer who won Heavyweight Bronze at the PanAm Games 2011 and later qualified for the Olympics. Career At the 2010 South American Games, Peralta competed at light heavyweight. He reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by Carlos Gongora, therefore winning the bronze medal. After these Games, he moved up to the heavyweight division. At the 2011 Pan American Games he lost the heavyweight semifinal to eventual champion Lenier Pero 9:13. Deivi ("Deivis") Julio Blanco (born April 12, 1980) is a Colombian amateur boxer best known to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Heavyweight (201 lbs limit) division.
