2011 MSBL Season
The 2011 MSBL season was the 23rd season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 18 March and ended on Saturday 23 July. The finals began on Friday 29 July and ended on Saturday 27 August, when the Wanneroo Wolves defeated the Perry Lakes Hawks in the MSBL Grand Final. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. The District Competition was introduced by the Western Australian Basketball Federation (WABF) as an 'elite' competition held on Friday nights, featuring eight Perth-based associations from the prominent districts of Perth, Swan Districts, Tangney/Willetton, Subiaco, East Perth, Cockburn, Stirling, and Claremont. Mandurah Magic
Mandurah Magic is an NBL1 West club based in Mandurah, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is a division of Mandurah Basketball Association (MBA), the major administrative basketball organisation in the region. The Magic play their home games at Mandurah Aquatic & Recreation Centre. Club history Mandurah Basketball's roots stem back to 1957. The Mandurah/ Peel region was represented in the State Basketball League (SBL) for the first time in 1990 in the form of a men's team known as the Kanyana Kings. The Kings saw immediate success in their first season with forward Vince Kelley and centre Carl Gonder leading them to a second-place finish and a 20–6 record. Block (basketball)
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Also, on a shooting foul, a blocked shot cannot be awarded or counted, even if the player who deflected the field goal attempt is different from the player who committed the foul. Steal (basketball)
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes a turnover by their positive, aggressive action(s). This can be done by deflecting and controlling, or by catching the opponent's pass or dribble of an offensive player. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called. Steals are credited to the defensive player who first causes the turnover, even if they do not end up with possession of the live ball. To earn a steal, the defensive player must be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. Whenever a steal is recorded by a defensive player, an offensive player must be credited as committing a turnover. Assist (basketball)
In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. An assist is also credited when a basket is awarded due to defensive goaltending. There is some judgment involved in deciding whether a passer should be credited with an assist. An assist can be scored for the passer even if the player who receives the pass makes a basket after dribbling the ball for a short distance. In basketball, a rebound, sometimes colloquially referred to as a board, is a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a routine part in the game; if a shot is successfully made possession of the ball will change, otherwise the rebound allows the defensive team to take possession. Rebounds are also given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his team's offensive end. A rebound can be grabbed by either an offensive player or a defensive player. Rebounds are divided into two main categories: "offensive rebounds", in which the ball is recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and "defensive rebounds", in which the defending team gains possession. Point (basketball)
Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. Ty Harrelson
Ty Harrelson (born September 22, 1980) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player who played the majority of his career in Germany and Australia. He is the current head coach of SC Rasta Vechta in the German Basketball Bundesliga. High school and college career Harrelson grew up as the son of two college basketball players. Under the guidance of his father, Harrelson had a historic high school career split between Sonora High School and S. H. Rider High School. He scored 2,786 career points, which at the time put him 18th on the all-time Texas scoring list. Harrelson played his freshman college season at Collin County Community College. Matthew Knight (basketball)
Matthew James Knight (born 31 May 1985) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played the majority of his 10-year career with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL). Knight, a native of Tasmania, began playing basketball in his hometown of Burnie as a youth. After a year at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2003, Knight ventured to the United States where he played four years of college basketball for Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Ben Purser
Ben Purser (born 24 February 1990) is an Australian basketball player for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West. He debuted for the Hawks in 2008 in the State Basketball League (SBL) and helped them win an SBL championship in 2018 with grand final MVP honours. He won a second championship with the Hawks in 2021 in the first season of the NBL1 West. He was named to the All-SBL First Team in 2018 and the SBL All-Defensive Five every year between 2016 and 2019. He was also the league's Most Improved Player in 2009. Jarrad Prue
Jarrad Prue (born 11 February 1982) is an Australian former basketball player and current coach. He played 15 seasons with the Lakeside Lightning of the NBL1 West and is considered one of the NBL1 West's all-time best, having earned the title as the league's greatest ever rebounder. In 2013, he had a three-game stint with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL). In 2020, he was appointed president of the Lakeside Lightning. Lee Roberts (basketball)
Lee Roberts (born February 10, 1987) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Findlay Oilers between 2005 and 2009, where he won an NCAA Division II national championship as a senior. Since 2011, Roberts has had consistent yearly stints in the NBL1 West in Australia. He has also consistently played seasons in South America since 2012. Early life Roberts was born in Seattle, Washington to army parents. He lived in Seattle for seven years before moving to Alaska, where he spent 2½ years before to moving to Cleveland, Ohio. He attended middle school and high school in the Cleveland area, as he played basketball for Midpark High School in Middleburg Heights.
