Cyclone Joachim
Joachim is the name given to a European windstorm which caused major damage in much of Western Europe between December 16–17, 2011. Winds gusting to were recorded on the summit of Puy de Dôme in France. Joachim explosively deepened under the influence of a shortwave trough during its development. Impact At least 400,000 people were without power in France. In Brittany, on the north-western coast of France, the cargo ship ''TK Bremen'' was blown aground. The nineteen-man crew was evacuated by helicopter, and the ship later disassembled. Major damage occurred on the Spanish coast. Roofs and trees were blown away, and all navigation on the Swiss lakes was closed. In the canton of Bern, a tree fell onto the railway line between Tramelan and Tavannes. This caused a train to derail, and its forward cars fell into the forest; three passengers suffered minor injuries. Clemens Thoma
Clemens Thoma (November 2, 1932 – December 7, 2011) was a Swiss theologian. He was professor of theology and Jewish studies and founder of the Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies (IJCF) at the University of Lucerne. He grew up as one of eleven children in a family in the Canton of St. Gallen.Hans Breitenmoser: ''Er beseitigt religiöse Barrieren''. In: Linth-Zeitung. Nr. 2/2002 (4. Jan 2002) After theological studies at St. Augustin near Bonn and St. Gabriel in Vienna, he was ordained a priest. At the University of Vienna, he studied Judaism under Kurt Schubert. As part of his research Thoma undertook a systematic approach to present Rabbinic parables to New Testament scholars, for comparative purposes. In 1994 Thoma received the Buber-Rosenzweig-Medal. Erhard Loretan
Erhard Loretan (28 April 1959 – 28 April 2011) was a Swiss mountain climber, often described as one of the greatest mountaineers of all times. Biography Loretan was born in Bulle in the canton of Fribourg. He trained as a cabinet maker (1979) and mountain guide (1981). Loretan was the third person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders (second without oxygen), a feat he accomplished at the age of 36. He made his first expedition to the Andes in 1980 and began climbing the eight-thousanders in 1982 with an ascent of Nanga Parbat. Thirteen years later, in 1995, he climbed the last of them, Kangchenjunga. Loretan took the principles of climbing fast and light in the Alps and applied them to the biggest mountains on Earth. In 1984, he did a first ascent of Annapurna (8091m) by the 7km long east ridge with Norbert Joos and descended via the north side, a traverse that has never been repeated. The Anti PowerPoint Party (APPP) is a Swiss political party dedicated to decreasing professional use of Microsoft PowerPoint and other forms of presentation software, which the party claims "causes national-economic damage amounting to 2.1 billion CHF" annually and lowers the quality of a presentation in "95% of the cases". The party advocates flip charts as an alternative to presentation software. APPP was formed by former software engineer Matthias Poehm and Port Lincoln footballer Billy-O-Roderick ahead of the 2011 federal elections in Switzerland. Prior to founding the party, Poehm wrote a book (The PowerPoint Fallacy) opposing the use of PowerPoint. The party's goal is to become the fourth largest party in Switzerland in terms of membership, and to initiate a national "referendum in order to seek for a prohibition of PowerPoint nd other presentation softwareduring presentations."
