Portuguese Television
Television in Portugal was introduced in 1956 (test broadcasts) by Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (now named Rádio e Televisão de Portugal), which held the nationwide television monopoly until late 1992. Regular broadcasting was introduced on March 7, 1957. Colour transmissions were introduced on March 10, 1980. Digital terrestrial television (DTT) was introduced at a very late stage when compared to other countries in Europe and with limited channels, and according to the European Audiovisual Observatory it occupies the last place in 34 European countries with the weakest offer on digital terrestrial television, in such a way that most Portuguese are subscribers of cable (HFC) or IPTV (DSL or FTTH) platforms, in percentages higher than in the rest of Europe and these platforms are well developed with many channels. Secret Story 1 (Portugal)
''Secret Story - Casa dos Segredos 1'' was the first season of the Portuguese version of the reality show '' Secret Story'', based on the original French version. The series started on October 3, 2010, and the finale, which took place in Campo Pequeno, Lisbon, was on December 31. The show aired on TVI and was produced by Endemol Portugal. The show lasted three months and was hosted by Júlia Pinheiro, Pedro Granger, and Leonor Poeiras. The eviction shows (also called Galas) took place on Sundays and a daily diary of what happened in the house was broadcast on the other days of the week. Both were on in prime time. Also, a sister show called ''Secret Story Extra'', airing in a late-night time slot, showed more of the events that took place in the house. On the TVI Direct cable TV channel, the show was broadcast 24/7. Since November 15, another hour of ''Secret Story'' began to be broadcast in the late afternoon, therefore making three programmes per day plus a 24/7 channel. In ... Operação Triunfo 2010
Operação Triunfo 2010 was the fourth and final edition of the Portuguese talent show Operação Triunfo based on Star Academy. It is broadcast by RTP, and it was the first season to broadcast the casting phase. The casting phase started on 16 October and the Gala phase started on 6 November. It follows the regular format. The host is Sílvia Alberto. Operação Triunfo
''Operação Triunfo (OT)'' is the Portuguese version of the original Star Academy (in the original Spanish version of the reality show ''Operación Triunfo'' broadcast by RTP). The first two seasons were hosted by Catarina Furtado, and the other two seasons were presented by Sílvia Alberto. The Portuguese version follows the regular format, with the 12-20 students being put into a music academy and training songs for a week, and singing in the "Gala" at the end of the week, usually on Saturdays. A jury composed by four personalities of the music world will judge the students performances and nominate four of them. Of those four, one is saved by the professors and another is saved by the students. The two remaining students are up for elimination. In the following week, one of the two nominees is saved. The channel has programming geared primarily to entertainment, female, with programs dedicated to cuisine, fashion, babies, among other things, the program schedule consists mainly of programs 30 minutes on average. Formerly, BemSimples was a timeshare channel distributed on Fox Life from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m between 2010 and March 1, 2011, when it gained its own channel. Canal180 is a Portuguese editorial platform, digital cable and open source TV channel entirely dedicated to culture, arts and creativity. Launched on 25 April 2011 by the media company OSTV, Canal180 was founded by João Vasconcelos, its current executive director, and by Nuno Alves. Rita Moreira, who previously worked at Portuguese radio channel Antena 3, is the channel's announcer. Available on Portuguese cable TV on position 180, the channel is distributed by NOS, MEO and Vodafone TV. Starting as a TV channel, Canal180 has over time morphed into an ecosystem of broadcast, social media content, and content production not dedicated for TV. Part of the funding for Canal180 came from the Creative Industries National Award, an award appointed by Unicer and Serralves Foundation, in 2010. Record Europa
Record Europa is a Portuguese pay television channel owned by Record, a Brazilian television network. Its programming is mostly taken from the Brazilian network. It provides general entertainment, telenovelas, Brazilian reality TV shows, and news. The channel also produces a limited amount of local content. Similar to what happens in Brazil, Record's main competitor is Globo. Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus religious programming is transmitted at late nights. Much like non-Brazilian stations using the RecordTV branding, the channel isn't directly owned by Grupo Record, but rather by Aion Future Holding, a figurehead company registered in Portugal set up by Edir Macedo. Animax Portugal was the Portuguese version of Animax. The channel launched in April 2008 and was closed in May 2011. Originally, the channel broadcast anime only, but started airing live-action shows in 2009. History Animax Portugal launched in Portugal as a programming block on AXN on 20 October 2007. The block ended in September 2008. The channel fully launched on 12 April 2008 in Portugal on Clix and Meo. The channel later extended its reach to ZON in April 2009.
