2011 Canadian National Women's Under-18 Championships
The 2011 Canadian National Women's Under-18 Championships in ice hockey were held in Saguenay, Quebec. All games were contested at the Centre Georges-Vézina. Team Ontario Red claimed their sixth gold medal. Team Manitoba claimed their third bronze medal in tournament history. Medal round The gold medal game signified the sixth time in seven tournaments in which Ontario Red and Quebec played each other. In every match, Team Ontario Red triumphed (2001, January 2005, November 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011). At sixty-three seconds into the first period, Jaimie McDonell scored the game-winning goal on Ann-Renée Desbiens. With the win, Ontario Red improved its all-time record at the tournament to 35-1. National Women's Under-18 Championship
The National Women's Under-18 Championship is a Canadian women's ice hockey tournament held by Hockey Canada for provincial and regional teams organized by its member branches. It is one of two national championships for female minor hockey in Canada, the other being the Esso Cup, which is a competition for midget 'AAA' clubs. History During its early years, the tournament was known as the ''Women's Under-18 Hockey Challenge'' and was not an annual event. The inaugural tournament was held in February 2001 in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. It was a six team tournament that featured regional teams: West (Manitoba/Saskatchewan), Quebec, Atlantic, Pacific (British Columbia/Alberta), and split squads from Ontario (Red and Blue). Saguenay, Quebec
Saguenay ( , , ) is a city in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada, on the Saguenay River, about north of Quebec City by overland route. It is about upriver and northwest of Tadoussac, located at the confluence with the St. Lawrence River. It was formed in 2002 by merging the cities of Chicoutimi and Jonquière and the town of La Baie, Quebec, La Baie. Chicoutimi was founded by French colonists in 1676. Centre Georges-Vézina
The Centre Georges-Vézina, formerly the Colisée de Chicoutimi, is a 4,724 capacity (3,683 seated) multi-purpose arena in Saguenay, Quebec, Saguenay, Quebec, Canada. The arena was built in 1949 and features an Hockey rink#Dimensions, Olympic-sized ice pad of 200' X 100'. It is named in honour of former Montreal Canadiens goalie and Chicoutimi native Georges Vézina. It is home to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens ice hockey team of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League since 1973. A proposal to build a new arena in downtown Chicoutimi was first put forward by mayor Josée Néron in 2018. The project did not move forward after the provincial government declined to provide funding. Current mayor Julie Dufour has instead proposed renovating Centre Georges-Vézina, changing the ice surface to the NHL-standard 200' X 85', and refitting the locker rooms, press box, and offices.
