2011 Calgary Roughnecks Season
The Calgary Roughnecks are a lacrosse team based in Calgary playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The 2011 season was the 10th in franchise history. Despite a fairly successful 10-6 2010 season, the Roughnecks made a number of major roster changes before the 2011 season. In August 2010, the Roughnecks traded superstar forward Josh Sanderson and a draft pick to the Boston Blazers for Darryl Veltman, Jon Harnett, Kyle Ross, and a draft pick. They also traded defender Jeff Moleski to the Washington Stealth. In October, longtime captain Tracey Kelusky was traded to the Buffalo Bandits for a first-round draft pick. Because of these changes, the Roughnecks were picked by some experts to finish out of the playoffs. But after a 5-3 start to the season, the Roughnecks won six straight, including wins over the defending champion Stealth as well as the Toronto Rock, who were first in the east at the time. National Lacrosse League
The National Lacrosse League (NLL) is a men's professional box lacrosse league in North America. The league is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The NLL currently has fifteen teams: ten in the United States and five in Canada. The NLL ranks third in average attendance for pro indoor sports worldwide, behind only the National Hockey League, NHL and National Basketball Association, NBA. Unlike other box lacrosse leagues which play in the summer, the NLL plays its games in the winter and spring, from December to June. Buffalo Bandits
The Buffalo Bandits are a professional box lacrosse team in the East Division of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). They play at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. The Bandits played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1992 to 1997, then in its successor the NLL since 1998. The Bandits are owned by Hockey Western New York LLC, a division of Pegula Sports and Entertainment led by Terry Pegula who also owns the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills. History The Bandits played their first season in 1992. They played home games at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium sharing with the Buffalo Sabres until its closure in 1996. Curt Malawsky
Curt Malawsky (born May 10, 1970 in Coquitlam, British Columbia) is a former box lacrosse player and currently the Assistant General Manager and Head Coach of the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League. Malawsky played for eleven seasons in the NLL and appeared in five Champion's Cup finals, three with Rochester, one with Arizona, and finally winning the title with Calgary in his final season in 2009. He was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a box player in 2015. In 2022, he was inducted into the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame. Malawsky is also the coach of the Coquitlam Adanacs Jr. A lacrosse team. Geoff Snider
Geoff Snider (born 2 April 1981) is a retired Canadian lacrosse player from Calgary, Alberta. Amateur career Growing up, Snider played for the Calgary Hornets in the Calgary District Lacrosse Association. His junior lacrosse career began with the Burnaby Lakers of the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League. In 1998, 2000 and 2002, he helped the Lakers win the Minto Cup as Canada's champion junior men's lacrosse team. He continued to play with the Senior "A" Coquitlam Adanacs in the Western Lacrosse Association, leading them to win the 2007 WLA championship. Snider honed his physical game in the summer box lacrosse seasons and in junior hockey. Jeff Shattler
Jeff Shattler (born December 26, 1984) is an Iroquois professional box lacrosse player who currently plays with the Saskatchewan Rush of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He has Ojibwe and Inuit roots and has competed internationally with the Iroquois Nationals, including with the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship silver medal winning teams in 2011 and 2015. He was the 2011 NLL Most Valuable Player, 2011 NLL Transition Player of the Year, and the 2018 NLL Cup Most Valuable Player. Devan Wray
Devan Wray (born October 2, 1979 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a lacrosse coach and former transition player. He wore #4 for the Calgary Roughnecks in the National Lacrosse League. He was also the defence coach for the Edmonton Rush in 2012 & 2013. Wray has been named the head coach of Team Finland for the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. Prior to the 2011 NLL season, Wray was traded to the Edmonton Rush for a 6th round pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. The Roughnecks later signed Wray off of the Rush practice roster after an injury to Nolan Heavenor before he played any games for the Rush. Daryl Veltman
Daryl Veltman (born September 25, 1985) is a Canadian professional lacrosse player. He is currently a member of the New England Black Wolves in the National Lacrosse League. High School/College career Veltman attended the Connecticut college-preparatory Salisbury School, before enrolling at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Veltman played collegiate lacrosse for the Hobart College Statesmen. As a freshman in 2005, he was honored by the ECAC Lacrosse League as "Rookie of the Year." During his freshman season, Veltman led his team in scoring. In all three subsequent seasons, he would continue his team's leading scorer. Kaleb Toth
Kaleb Toth (born August 8, 1977) is a Canadian former professional lacrosse player. He played for the Toronto Rock and Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He is now an assistant coach for the Vancouver Warriors of the NLL. Professional career Toth was the second overall draft pick in the 1999 NLL draft by the Toronto Rock and he played with them for two seasons. Scott Ranger (born June 21, 1983, in Nanaimo, British Columbia) is a former professional Canadian lacrosse player who played for the Calgary Roughnecks and San Jose Stealth in the National Lacrosse League. Curtis Dickson
Curtis Dickson (born July 18, 1988) is a Canadian professional lacrosse player who currently plays for the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League. Prior to signing with the Seals in August 2022, he played 11 seasons with the Calgary Roughnecks. He has also played for the Chaos Lacrosse Club in the Premier Lacrosse League and Denver Outlaws and New York Lizards in the MLL. Scott Carnegie
Scott Carnegie (born December 17, 1985 in London, Ontario) is a former professional lacrosse defenceman. He wore #22 for the Calgary Roughnecks and #27 for the Colorado Mammoth in the National Lacrosse League. He is currently the Head of Player Development for the Mammoth. His brother Mike Carnegie is also a former lacrosse player. They played together for the Roughnecks from 2008 to 2017. Carnegie joined the Roughnecks as a free agent in 2008.
