2010 WPS Expansion Draft
The 2010 WPS Expansion Draft was a special draft for the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) expansion team Western New York Flash that took place on November 20, 2010. The Flash had the opportunity to make nine player selections from the existing seven WPS teams. Format * Existing teams may protect up to 10 players, but must leave a minimum of 3 unprotected. (Free agents are not included in either category.) * Expansion team must each select one player from each existing team prior to selecting a second player from an existing team. * Existing team may protect one additional player after losing their first player. * Existing team may protect all players after losing their second player. * An existing team may not lose more than two players. * Expansion team may select a total of nine players. Women's Professional Soccer
Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was the top-level professional women's soccer league in the United States. It began play on March 29, 2009. The league was composed of seven teams for its first two seasons and fielded six teams for the 2011 season, with continued plans for future expansion. The WPS was the highest level in the United States soccer pyramid for the women's game. On January 30, 2012, the league announced suspension of the 2012 season, citing several internal organization struggles as the primary cause. Some of these issues included an ongoing legal battle with magicJack owner Dan Borislow and the lack of resources invested into the league. On May 18, 2012, WPS announced the league folded and would not return in 2013. Western New York Flash
The Western New York Flash (WNY Flash) was an American soccer club based in Elma, New York that competed in the United Women's Soccer league. They have won league championships in four different leagues: the USL W-League in 2010, Women's Professional Soccer in 2011, Women's Premier Soccer League Elite in 2012, and the National Women's Soccer League in 2016. The team was founded in 2008 as the Buffalo Flash and played in the USL W-League from 2008 to 2010. In 2011, the team became the Western New York Flash and joined Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), its only season in the league. In 2012, the team was a member of Women's Premier Soccer League Elite (WPSL-E) following the folding of the WPS. Kaley Fountain
Kaley Nikole Fountain (born July 1, 1988) is an American professional soccer player. She previously played for FC Gold Pride, Atlanta Beat, and Western New York Flash of Women's Professional Soccer and was a member of the United States U-20 women's national soccer team squad that won the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Early life Wake Forest University Fountain attended Wake Forest University. At Wake Forest, she played in 86 games, starting in 81 of them. In 2009, she claimed the number four spot on single-season goals for Wake Forest after scoring eleven goals. She also had ten assists that season. Fountain would later return to Wake Forest as an assistant coach. Playing career Club FC Gold Pride Fountain was drafted by FC Gold Pride in the second round of the 2010 WPS Draft. Atlanta Beat (WPS)
The Atlanta Beat was an American soccer club based in Atlanta, Georgia that competed on a professional level. The team joined Women's Professional Soccer as an expansion team in 2010, and played its home games at Kennesaw State University Soccer Stadium, the result of a public-private partnership between the team and Kennesaw State University. The club took the name and logo of the former Atlanta Beat (WUSA) of the defunct Women's United Soccer Association. Beverly Goebel
Beverly Goebel Yanez (born Beverly June Goebel; July 19, 1988) is an American soccer coach and former professional player who is currently the assistant coach of Racing Louisville FC and most recently at NJ/NY Gotham FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). As a player, Goebel Yanez played as a forward for Reign FC in the NWSL, Melbourne City in the Australian W-League, INAC Kobe Leonessa in the Japanese Nadeshiko.League, PK-35 in Finland's Naisten Liiga, as well as the Western New York Flash and the Washington Freedom in the WPS. After switching from the midfielder position to forward in 2012, Goebel Yanez became the top scorer in Japan's Nadeshiko league in 2013 earning the Golden Boot award. Washington Freedom
Washington Freedom was an American professional soccer club based in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Germantown, Maryland, that participated in Women's Professional Soccer. The Freedom was founded in 2001 as a member of the defunct Women's United Soccer Association. Beginning in 2004, the Freedom played its home games at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
