North Carolina Senate
The North Carolina Senate is the upper chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly, which along with the North Carolina House of Representatives—the lower chamber—comprises the state legislature of North Carolina. The term of office for each senator is only two years. The Senate's prerogatives and powers are similar to those of the other house, the House of Representatives. Its members do, however, represent districts that are larger than those of their colleagues in the House. The President of the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, but the Lt. Governor has very limited powers and only votes to break a tie. Before the office of Lt. Governor was created in 1868, the Senate was presided over by a "Speaker." Elections were held on November 2, 2010 to determine North Carolina's 13 members of the United States House of Representatives. Representatives were elected for two-year-terms to serve in the 112th United States Congress from January 3, 2011 until January 3, 2013. Primary elections were held on May 4, 2010 and primary runoff elections were held on June 22, 2010. Of the 13 elections, the races in the 2nd, 8th and 11th districts were rated as competitive by '' Sabato's Crystal Ball'', while the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 11th districts were rated as competitive by ''CQ Politics'' and ''The Rothenberg Political Report'', and the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 11th districts were rated as competitive by ''The Cook Political Report''. Donald Gene Davis (born August 29, 1971) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for North Carolina's 1st congressional district since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented the 5th district in the North Carolina Senate from 2013 to 2023.
