Big Day Out
The Big Day Out (BDO) was an annual music festival that was held in five Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Adelaide, and Perth, as well as Auckland, New Zealand. The festival was held during summer, typically in January of each year but was sometimes held as late as early February in some cities including Perth. The event was conceptualised after the Violent Femmes announced a tour of Australia. Promoters Ken West and Vivian Lees sought another act as middle-level support for the band's tour. They succeeded in securing Nirvana to play the Sydney leg at the Hordern Pavilion. The Big Day Out debuted on the 1992 Australia Day public holiday in Sydney and eventually expanded to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth the following year. Eddy Current Suppression Ring
Eddy Current Suppression Ring (sometimes seen as ECSR) are an Australian rock band formed in 2003. By 2004 their line-up was Daniel Young Danny Current on drums, his brother Michael Young Eddy Current on lead guitar and keyboards, Brendan Huntley Brendan Suppression on lead vocals and Brad Barry Rob Solid on bass guitar. They have released four studio albums, ''Eddy Current Suppression Ring'' (October 2006), ''Primary Colours'' (May 2008), ''Rush to Relax'' (February 2010) and ''All in Good Time'' (December 2019). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2008, ''Primary Colours'' was nominated for Best Rock Album. It won the Australian Music Prize of $30,000 for the band in March 2009. ''Rush to Relax'' peaked at number 20 on the ARIA Albums chart and was listed in the book, '' 100 Best Australian Albums'' (2010). James Reyne
James Michael Nugent Reyne OAM (born 19 May 1957) is an Australian rock musician and singer-songwriter both in solo work and, until 1986, with the band Australian Crawl. Biography Early years Reyne was born in Lagos, Nigeria. His father, Rodney Michael Reyne, was an English-born former Royal Marine, who served as aide-de-camp to the Governor of the state of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, and subsequently worked for British Petroleum. His paternal grandfather, Cecil Nugent Reyne, was an English rear admiral. His mother, Judith Graham, née Leask, was a teacher. His younger brother, David Reyne, was also born in Nigeria. The family moved to Victoria in late 1959, where a younger sister Elisabeth was born. Reyne lived in Mount Eliza, Victoria, was educated at The Peninsula School and studied drama at the Victorian College of Arts. Katie Noonan
Katie Anne Noonan (born 2 May 1977) is an Australian singer-songwriter. In addition to a successful solo career encompassing opera, jazz, pop, rock and dance, she was the singer in the band George and remains the singer in the band Elixir; performs with her mother Maggie Noonan; and plays with her band The Captains. Noonan was the musical director of and performed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games' opening and closing ceremonies. Early life Noonan grew up with a strong background in classical music, with her mother Maggie being a well-known opera singer. She studied opera and jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium. Cohesion (album)
''Cohesion'' is the fourth studio album by Australian rock band Gyroscope, released through Island Records on 9 April 2010. It peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album's first single "Some of the Places I Know" was released on 1 February 2010, and the second single "Baby, I'm Gettin' Better" was released on 17 May. The third single, What Do I Know About Pain? was released on 1 October 2010. All three songs have had music videos provided for them. The first two singles have peaked within the top 40 of the ARIA Singles Charts. Album history The production of the album was first revealed towards the end of September 2009, when the band announced on their MySpace that they had "packed up their gear and headed to the rolling green hills of Monmouth, Wales to record album #4." Gyroscope (band)
Gyroscope are an Australian rock band from Perth, which formed in 1997 as Gyroscope Sunday. The members are Daniel Sanders as lead vocalist and on guitar, Zoran Trivic on guitar and backing vocals, Brad Campbell on bass guitar and backing vocals and Rob Nassif on drums. As of 2014 the group has released four studio albums on major labels. Gyroscope's first major label album, ''Sound Shattering Sound'', was released in June 2004 – seven years after formation. It peaked at No. 37 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their second such album, ''Are You Involved?'', was issued in September 2005, which debuted at No. 20. A mantra (Pali: ''manta'') or mantram (मन्त्रम्) is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words in Sanskrit, Pali and other languages believed by practitioners to have religious, magical or spiritual powers. Ten (Gabriella Cilmi Album)
''Ten'' is the second studio album by Australian-born singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi, released on 22 March 2010. The lead single, " On a Mission", appeared two weeks ahead of the album and marked Cilmi's foray into more 1980s inspired music. ''Ten'' is Cilmi's second and final album released under Island Records. The album peaked in the top 40 in Australia and the UK. PopJustice placed ''Ten'' at number 4 on their "Top 33 albums of 2010" list. The album was not released in the United States. Background According to Cilmi, ''Ten'' features "lots of uptempo funk and disco-inspired numbers designed to make people groove" as well as "some more sexy tracks". One song incorporates a type of yodel into it. Gabriella Cilmi
Gabriella Lucia Cilmi ( ; ; born 10 October 1991) is an Australian pop singer. A contralto, Cilmi is known for her distinctive raspy singing voice. Her debut album, ''Lessons to Be Learned'', was released in March 2008, becoming a moderate international success. Cilmi won six ARIA Music Awards, including Single of the Year and Best Female Artist, in 2008. Her second studio album, '' Ten'', was released in March 2010. John Williamson (singer)
John Robert Williamson (born 1 November 1945) is an Australian country music and folk music singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, television host and conservationist. Williamson usually writes and performs songs that relate to the history and culture of Australia, particularly the outback, in a similar vein to Slim Dusty and Buddy Williams before him. Williamson has released over fifty albums, ten videos, five DVDs, and two lyric books and has sold more than 4,000,000 albums in Australia. His best known hit is " True Blue". Calling All Cars is an Australian Alternative rock band from Melbourne, Victoria and consists of brothers Haydn and James Ing, along with Adam Montgomery. The band have been heavily touring for the past 10 years, released 3 acclaimed albums and have received considerable rotation on Australian radio, including 'album of the week' on Triple J. The band was named after The Sopranos episode, ' Calling All Cars History 2005–2009: Beginnings Calling All Cars formed in 2005 with brothers Haydn and James Ing and friend Matt Lonergan, who was eventually replaced with Adam Montgomery. Haydn and James grew up in Narooma, New South Wales before moving permanently to Melbourne. The band gradually progressed through live performances with acts like Cog (band), Cog and The Butterfly Effect on national tours.
