2009–10 Uganda Big League
The 2009–10 Ugandan Big League is the 1st season of the official second tier Ugandan football championship. Overview The 2009–10 Uganda Big League was contested by 16 teams divided into two groups. The Elgon Group was won by Gulu United FC and the Rwenzori Group was won by Maroons FC. The third promotion place went to UTODA FC who won the promotion play-off. Clubs within the Big League enter the Ugandan Cup and Gulu United FC progressed as far as the Quarter Finals where they were defeated 3-0 away to Masaka LC . Ugandan Big League
The Ugandan Big League is the second tier of Ugandan football pyramid. History Original concept The concept of re-structuring Ugandan football with the creation of a new second tier league was first mooted in October 2008 by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations. The idea that was single-handedly promoted by Eng. Moses Magogo was ridiculed, resisted, and fought by everyone. Although Magogo felt abandoned but he was buoyed by the inaugural clubs that were determined to proceed. Eventually out of persistence, Magogo won one by one convert and eventually the league was passed by the FUFA Executive Committee. The new national second division league, known as the FUFA Big League (FBL), was to cater for leading sides in the five regions. Second tier sides at that time competed at the regional level, with many of them failing to cope with advancement whenever they gained promotion to the national Super League. Mbarara United FC
Mbarara United Football Club was a Ugandan football club located in Mbarara, Mbarara District in Western Uganda. The club played in the Ugandan Big League in the 2009–10 season but there is currently no FUFA records that confirm that the club is still operating. History Mbarara United were one of the 8 teams that participated in the inaugural season of the National First Division in 1968–69, the league being the forerunner of the Ugandan Super League. The club dropped out after one season at the highest level but have had 6 spells playing in topflight football covering 9 seasons over a 40-year period. They last played in the Ugandan Super League in the 2008–09 season and were unfortunate to be relegated having finished in 14th position with 35 points. Masaka
Masaka is a city in the Buganda Region of Uganda, west of Lake Victoria. The city is the headquarters of Masaka District.
