The 2009–10 Azerbaijan First Division, also known as the Birinci Dästä, is the second-level of football in Azerbaijan. Twelve teams participated in Azerbaijani First Division that season. Azerbaijan First Division
The Azerbaijan First Division ( az, Azərbaycan Birinci Divizionu) is the second highest professional division in Azerbaijani professional football (soccer), football. The division is run by Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan, AFFA. No teams are promoted to Azerbaijan Premier League, Premier Division. History Due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all Azerbaijan clubs of the former Soviet Top League, Soviet Premier Division and Soviet First League, Soviet First Division conformed a single Azerbaijan Premier League, which meant that the new second tier of Azerbaijan football would remain regionalized. For the first two seasons three regional groups conformed the second tier, until in 1994 the single table in use today began to be used. Competition format The First Division currently consists of 14 teams. All teams play each other two times. Mil-Muğan FK
Mil-Muğan FK is an Azerbaijani football (soccer), football club based in Imishli, that currently plays in Azerbaijan First Division. The club was founded in 2004 by МКТ Istehsalat-Kommersiya, a cotton manufacturing company. History The club was immediately admitted to the AFFA Supreme League after its formation. They finished 8th in 2004/05 and 9th in 2005/06. In 2006 the club also played in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2006, UEFA Intertoto Cup due to the rejection of several Azerbaijan clubs in this competition. Although it was successful in winning the home game against Moldovan FC Tiraspol, Tiraspol in the first stage (1:0), the club lost in Moldova (1:2) and thus, was out of the tournament. Mingachevir
Mingachevir ( az, Mingəçevir ) is the fourth-largest city in Azerbaijan with a population of about 106,000. It's often called the "city of lights" because of its hydroelectric power station on the Kur River, which divides the city down the middle. The current city was founded in 1948, partly by German prisoners of war captured during World War II. Mingechevir is also home to Mingachevir Polytechnic Institute. ASK Arena ( az, ASK Arena), formerly Inter Arena and Shafa Stadium is an all-seater football stadium located in Baku . Bakılı PFK is an Azerbaijani football club, based in Baku that currently plays in the Azerbaijan First Division. History The club was founded in 1963 under the name of ''Araz'', re-established by Misir Abilov in 1995 and consisted of amateur footballers. Officially as a professional football club it was registered as ''Araz Football Club'' in 1997. Since 1998 the club is called ''Bakili Baku''. Neftchala () is a city and the capital of the Neftchala District of Azerbaijan. Etymology The city name is of Persian language, Persian ("naft" meaning oil or petroleum) and Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani ("çala" meaning trench) origin, meaning oil trench.
