Primary Elections
Primary elections, or direct primary are a voting process by which voters can indicate their preference for their party's candidate, or a candidate in general, in an upcoming general election, local election, or by-election. Depending on the country and administrative divisions within the country, voters might consist of the general public in what is called an open primary, or solely the members of a political party in what is called a closed primary. In addition to these, there are other variants on primaries (which are discussed below) that are used by many countries holding elections throughout the world. Jorge Larrañaga
Jorge Washington Larrañaga Fraga (8 August 1956 – 22 May 2021) was an Uruguayan politician of the National Party (PN) who was Minister of the Interior from 1 March 2020 until his death. He also previously served as Intendant of Paysandú from 1990 to 1999, as well as a Senator between 2000 and 2020. Background Larrañaga grew up and attended school in Paysandú. He studied law at the Universidad de la República and practiced until 1990, specializing in civil and labour law. Elections In Uruguay
Uruguay elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. Uruguay has a stable multi-party system. The two "traditional parties" ( Colorado Party and National Party) were founded in 1836, and were predominant for over a century. The Broad Front coalition was created in 1971, including members such as the Socialist Party (founded in 1910) and the Communist Party (founded in 1920). Presidential elections The president and the vice-president are elected on one ballot for a five-year term by the people. Each party must elect its candidates for President and Vice-President in primary elections, which are usually held in June. The selected candidates face the electorate in the general elections in October. If no candidate obtains the absolute majority of votes, there is a runoff between the two most-voted candidates. Pablo Andrés Mieres Gómez (born 30 July 1959 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan lawyer, sociologist, professor and politician of the Independent Party (PI), serving as Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Uruguay, since March 1, 2020. Vamos Uruguay (Spanish, 'Go Uruguay') is a political sector of the Colorado Party in Uruguay. It was founded by Pedro Bordaberry in 2007.
