2009 Swiss Federal Council Election
A by-election to the Swiss Federal Council was held in Switzerland on 16 September 2009, after incumbent Federal Councillor Pascal Couchepin ( Free Democratic Party, FDP/PLR) announced his intention to retire on 31 October 2009. Some saw the election as an important decision regarding whom the "fourth seat" in the Federal Council belonged to (the FDP or the CVP), and as an indirect political decision regarding whether the SP or the SVP would have more influence in the future. Didier Burkhalter (FDP/PLR) was elected to succeed Couchepin in the fourth ballot. Candidates and party positions The election became a contest between the center-right Free Democrats and the centrist Christian Democrats, who both claimed to be entitled to the free Council seat. The right-wing Swiss People's Party and the left-wing Social Democratic Party's support, however, will decide the outcome. Didier Eric Burkhalter (born 17 April 1960) is a Swiss politician who served as a List of members of the Swiss Federal Council, Member of the Swiss Federal Council from 2009 to 2017. A member of FDP.The Liberals, he was President of the Swiss Confederation in 2014. Burkhalter was 2009 Swiss Federal Council election, elected to the Federal Council (Switzerland), Swiss Federal Council on 16 September 2009; he succeeded Pascal Couchepin on 1 November 2009 when he became head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs. Pascal Broulis (born 3 April 1965 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, Sainte-Croix, Vaud) is a Switzerland, Swiss politician. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Council of State of Vaud, Council of State in the Cantons of Switzerland, canton of Vaud. He heads the cantonal finance department, and has been the President of the Council of State since 2007. Dick Marty (born 7 January 1945) is a Switzerland, Swiss politician (FDP.The Liberals) and former state prosecutor of the canton of Ticino. He is a former member of the Swiss Council of States (from 1995 to 2011) and of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Early life Marty was born in Sorengo. Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf (born 16 March 1956) is a Swiss politician and lawyer who served as a Member of the Swiss Federal Council from 2008 to 2015. A member of the Swiss People's Party (SVP/UDC) until 2008, she has since then been a member of the Conservative Democratic Party (BDP/PBD). Moritz Leuenberger (born 21 September 1946) is a Swiss politician and lawyer who served as a Member of the Swiss Federal Council from 1995 to 2010.
