2009 Karachi Bank Robbery
The 2009 Karachi bank robbery occurred on December 13, 2009 when robbers stole US$3.7 million from the main branch of Allied Bank Limited, Allied Bank in Karachi, Pakistan. It is considered the biggest bank robbery in history of Pakistan. Police say the gang was led by one of the bank's guards. The robbers broke into the main vault and stole foreign currency worth 10 billion rupees ($3.7 million). The main culprit of the robbery was arrested by the police on 19 December 2009. Allied Bank Limited () is the fifth largest commercial bank in Pakistan and is a subsidiary of Ibrahim Group. Allied Bank with its registered office in Lahore is one of the largest banks within the country with over 1400+ branches and ATMs. It was the first Muslim bank established in Pakistan before independence (1942) with the name of Australasia Bank. The area of Karachi ( ur, کراچی, sd, ڪراچي) in Sindh, Pakistan has a natural harbor and has been used as fishing port by local fisherman belonging to Sindhi tribes since prehistory.
