Fingal County Council
Fingal County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Fhine Gall) is the authority responsible for local government in the county of Fingal, Ireland. It is one of three local authorities that comprised the former Dublin County Council before its abolition on 1 January 1994 and is one of four local authorities in County Dublin. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transport, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 40 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Mayor. The county administration is headed by a Chief Executive, AnnMarie Farrelly. The 2009 Irish local elections were held in all the counties, cities and towns of the Republic of Ireland on Friday, 5 June 2009, on the same day as the European Parliament election and two by-elections ( Dublin South and Dublin Central). Overview The election results were significant for a number of reasons: *Fine Gael gained 88 seats and became the largest party at local level for the first time ever. *Fianna Fáil lost 135 seats and became the second-largest party nationally, and the third-largest in Dublin. *The Labour Party increased its seat total by 43 seats, and became the largest party on Dublin City Council. Joe Higgins (politician)
Joe Higgins (born 20 May 1949) is an Irish former Socialist Party politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency from 1997 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2016. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dublin constituency from 2009 to 2011. Early life One of nine children of a small farming family, Higgins was born in 1949 in Lispole, part of the Dingle Gaeltacht in County Kerry. He went to school in the Dingle Christian Brothers School, and after finishing he enrolled in the priesthood. As part of his training he was sent to a Catholic seminary school in Minnesota, United States in the 1960s. Higgins became politicised at the time of anti-Vietnam War protests and the civil rights movement. Mags Murray
Margaret Mary Murray (née O'Keeffe; 9 September 1961 – 13 June 2020) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician, a councillor on Fingal County Council for the Castleknock Local Electoral Area and the mayor of Fingal County Council. Biography Born in Cregane, Charleville, County Cork, she played camogie with the local camogie team, Ballyagran. Murray won an All-Ireland Senior Club Camogie Championship with her club in 1978, playing in the position of right wing forward. Upon moving to Dublin, Mags Murray joined St Brigids GAA Club as a camogie player and also as a mentor. Murray was first elected at the 2004 elections as a member of the Progressive Democrats. She was subsequently an unsuccessful candidate for the party in the 2007 Irish general election in Dublin West. As the Progressive Democrats became defunct she joined Fianna Fáil in February 2008. Roderic O'Gorman (born 12 December 1981) is an Irish Green Party politician who has served as Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth since June 2020. Cian O'Callaghan (born 7 May 1979) is an Irish Social Democrats politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin Bay North constituency since the 2020 general election. Averil Power (born 26 July 1978) is an Irish former politician who served as a Senator for the Industrial and Commercial Panel from 2011 to 2016. Patrick Nulty (born 18 November 1982) is a teacher, university lecturer and former Irish Labour Party politician. He was elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin West at a by-election in October 2011. He sat as an independent TD after losing the Labour Party whip on 6 December 2011. Ruth Coppinger
Ruth Coppinger (born 18 April 1967) is an Irish politician and member of the Socialist Party. She was elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) in the Dublin West constituency in 2014. In the 2016 general election, she ran as a candidate for Anti-Austerity Alliance–People Before Profit and retained her seat in Dáil Éireann until 2020.
