Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Milan Sáblík (; 14 March 1991 in Nové Město na Moravě) is a Czech former speedskater and the younger brother of Martina Sáblíková, the 2007 European Champion and double World Single Distances Champion. Martina Sáblíková and Milan Sáblík are a rare example of sister and brother both holding world records in the same sport at the same time; Martina holds the (senior) world records in the 5,000-m and 10,000-m events (both from March 2007), as well as in the 3,000m (March 2019), while Milan held the junior world record for the team pursuit with fellow Czech junior skaters Pavel Kulma and Zdeněk Haselberger between 2007 and 2010. Alexis Contin (born 19 October 1986) is a French speed skater. He is ranked 63 on the Adelskalender and is coached by Jan van Veen. Contin made his international speedskating debut at the Speed Skating World Cup in December 2005.
