The 2009 European Parliament election in Luxembourg was the election of the Members of the European Parliament, delegation from Luxembourg to the European Parliament in 2009. It was held on the same day as the 2009 Luxembourgian legislative election, elections to the national legislature, the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg, Chamber of Deputies. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. 2009 European Parliament Election
The 2009 European Parliament election was held in the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) between 4 and 7 June 2009. A total of 736 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were elected to represent some 500 million Europeans, making these the biggest trans-national elections in history. An additional 18 observers ("virtual MEPs") were (supposed to be) pre-elected. European People's Party
The European People's Party (EPP) is a European political party with Christian-democratic, conservative, and liberal-conservative member parties. A transnational organisation, it is composed of other political parties. Founded by primarily Christian-democratic parties in 1976, it has since broadened its membership to include liberal-conservative parties and parties with other centre-right political perspectives. On 31 May 2022, the party elected as its President Manfred Weber, who was also EPP's '' Spitzenkandidat'' in 2019. Aly Jaerling
Alphonse 'Aly' Jaerling (born 30 January 1948 in Esch-sur-Alzette) is a Luxembourgish politician. He sat in the Chamber of Deputies from 1999, when he was first elected for the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) until 2009. He is also a member of Esch-sur-Alzette's communal council (1993 – 1999, 2000 – ). Jaerling left the ADR on 1 May 2006, protesting at the shift in the party's emphasis away from pension reform, which had originally been the ADR's ''raison d'être'', and decrying the 'nationalism' espoused by the party. The party had recently renamed itself from 'Action Committee for Democracy and Pensions Justice', a name that it had borne since 1992, as part of its gradual metamorphosis from a single-issue party to one of the established parties.
