2009 California Wildfires
The 2009 California wildfires were a series of 9,159 wildfires that were active in the US state of California, during the year 2009. The fires burned more than of land from early February through late November, due to Red Flag conditions, destroying hundreds of structures, injuring 134 people, and killing four. The wildfires also caused at least US$134.48 million in damage. Although the fires burned many different regions of California in August, the month was especially notable for several very large fires which burned in Southern California, despite being outside of the normal fire season for that region. The Station Fire, north of Los Angeles, was the largest and deadliest of these wildfires. It began in late August, and resulted in the devastation of of land as well as the death of two firefighters. MODIS
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is a satellite-based sensor used for earth and climate measurements. There are two MODIS sensors in Earth orbit: one on board the Terra (EOS AM) satellite, launched by NASA in 1999; and one on board the Aqua (EOS PM) satellite, launched in 2002. MODIS has now been replaced by the VIIRS, which first launched in 2011 aboard the Suomi NPP satellite. The MODIS instruments were built by Santa Barbara Remote Sensing. They capture data in 36 spectral bands ranging in wavelength from 0.4 μm to 14.4 μm and at varying spatial resolutions (2 bands at 250 m, 5 bands at 500 m and 29 bands at 1 km). Station Fire (2009)
The Station Fire was the largest wildfire of the 2009 California wildfire season, as well as the largest wildfire in the history of Los Angeles County, that burned in the Angeles National Forest, igniting on August 26, 2009 near the U.S. Forest Service ranger station on the Angeles Crest Highway. Two firefighters, Captain Tedmund Hall and Firefighter Specialist Arnie Quinones, died on August 30, when their fire truck plunged off a cliff during an attempt to set backfires to slow the blaze. The blaze threatened 12,000 structures in the National Forest and the nearby communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, Glendale, Acton, La Crescenta, Juniper Hills, Littlerock and Altadena, as well as the Sunland and Tujunga neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles. Yuba County, California

La Brea Fire
The La Brea Fire was a fast moving 2009 wildfire which occurred in Southern California in the United States. The fire began near La Brea Creek in Santa Barbara County, in the Los Padres National Forest. The fire started burning on August 8, and just 5 days later on August 13 had grown by 10,000 acres, or 40 sq. km. When the wildfire was finally contained on August 22, it had burned 89,489 acres (140 sq. mi; 362 sq. km.) of land. The huge Zaca Fire burned in the same region as the La Brea Fire, and occurred just two years prior in 2007. Containing the Fire The fire was first reported on Saturday August 8, 2009 at 2:45 PM in the San Rafael Wilderness Area and grew to a size of 1,300 acres by nightfall. Brown Fire
The Brown Fire was a wildfire that burned in Lund, Nevada in the United States. First reported on June 24, 2020, the Brown Fire burned and was contained on June 30, 2020. The fire skirted along Highway 318 and threatened the south side of Lund, resulting in the mandatory evacuation of residents in the southern part of the community. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Events The Brown Fire was first reported on June 24, 2020 around 3:00 pm EST, burning on the south and east side of the community of Lund, Nevada. The fire was initially estimated to be around and growing, fueled by grass, brush and timber, and moving closer to Lund and skirting along Highway 318. Lassen County, California
