2008–09 A-League
The 2008–09 A-League was the 32nd season of top-flight soccer in Australia, and the fourth season of the A-League competition since its establishment in 2004. Two new clubs, North Queensland Thunder and Gold Coast Galaxy had received tentative licences from the FFA but these were revoked for the 2008–09 season on 12 March 2008. Expansion plans are on hold until the 2009–10 season. Based on their 2007–08 performances, the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets competed in the 2009 AFC Champions League for the first time. Changes to the league included: * The introduction of both a youth league and women's league aligned with A-League clubs. * An increase in the salary cap to A$1.9 million. * The addition of a Junior Marquee player. Roddy Vargas
Rodrigo Alejandro "Roddy" Vargas (born 20 October 1978) is an Australian soccer player who plays as a central defender for the Victorian State League Division 1 club Nunawading City FC, but is mostly known for his time at Melbourne Victory FC, Green Gully Cavaliers and at Melbourne Knights FC, where he was club captain. Club career Vargas began his career at the Victorian Premier League side, Springvale City, where he debuted at the age of 17 under Gus McLeod. After three seasons with Port Melbourne, at the age of 21, he was recruited by National Soccer League side Melbourne Knights FC. Vaughan Coveny (born 13 December 1971) is a retired football player who frequently represented New Zealand in international matches. Coveny's senior club career spanned 20 years, with his most notable stint being at South Melbourne during their National Soccer League era. Troy Hearfield (born 31 October 1987 in Tamworth, NSW) is an Australian football (soccer) player who plays for Sawtell FC. Club career Hearfield signed for Newcastle Jets in 2006. On 2 February 2007, Hearfield made his professional debut in a game against Sydney FC. He made the transfer to Wellington Phoenix on 28 March 2008 after a rift between his former club Newcastle Jets about his release, and scored his first Phoenix goal against his former club on 23 November 2008. Shane Edward Smeltz (born 29 September 1981) is a New Zealand Australian footballer. He plays as a striker for Guiseley AFC in the Northern Premier League, the 7th tier of English football. Carlos Gerardo Hernández Valverde (born 9 April 1982), known simply as Carlos Hernández, is a former Costa Rican football player who last played as an attacking midfielder for Puntarenas in the Segunda División de Costa Rica.
