2008–09 Skeleton World Cup
The 2008–09 Skeleton World Cup is a multi-race tournament over a season for skeleton. The season started on November 28, 2008, in Winterberg and ended on February 12, 2009, in Park City, Utah. The World Cup is organised by the FIBT who also run world cups and championships in bobsleigh Bobsleigh or bobsled is a team winter sport that involves making timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sleigh. Aleksandr Tretyakov (skeleton Racer)
Aleksandr Vladimirovich Tretyakov (russian: Александр Владимирович Третьяков; born 19 April 1985) is a Russian skeleton rider. Tretyakov is Olympic champion (2014), World champion (2013), European champion (2007) as well as two-times winner of the Skeleton World Cup, which he won in 2008–09 and 2018–19. Career Tretyakov is the first Russian who won the World Championships ( 2013 in St. Moritz), the overall Skeleton World Cup ( 2008–09) and an Olympics bronze medal (at the 2010 Winter Olympics). Florian Grassl (born 22 April 1980 in Freilassing) is a German skeleton racer who has competed since 2002. Maya Pedersen-Bieri
Maya Pedersen-Bieri (born 27 November 1972 in Spiez) is a Swiss-Norwegian skeleton racer who has competed since 1995. She won the gold medal in the women's skeleton event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. She retired from the sport in 2010 before returning to compete for Norway (the country of her husband and coach, Snorre Pedersen) in 2016, becoming at the oldest woman to start a World Cup race when she returned to the top level of skeleton in 2017. She is listed in the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation athlete registration system as Maya Pedersen. Mellisa Hollingsworth
Mellisa Hollingsworth (born October 4, 1980) is a retired Canadian athlete who competed from 1995 to 2014. She won the bronze medal in the women's skeleton event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Hollingsworth also won a silver in the women's skeleton event at the 2000 FIBT World Championships in Igls, Austria. She won the women's Skeleton World Cup overall title both in 2005–06 and in 2009–10. Hollingsworth is the cousin of Ryan Davenport, who won three medals in the men's skeleton event at the FIBT World Championships in the late 1990s. Hollingsworth participated in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. After three runs, she was in second position behind Amy Williams of Great Britain. Kerstin Szymkowiak (born Kerstin Jürgens on 19 December 1977 in Siegen) is a German retired skeleton racer who has competed since 2002. She won three bronze medals in the women's skeleton event, earning them in 2004, 2008, and 2009. Her best overall seasonal finish in the women's Skeleton World Cup title was third in 2004-5. Jürgens married after the 2007-08 Skeleton World Cup season and has been competing since in the 2008-09 Skeleton World Cup season under her married name. She finished second behind defending world champion Anja Huber of Germany in the season opener at Winterberg on November 28, 2008. Szymkowiak's nickname is the "Ice Tiger" (Eistiger in German). Eric Bernotas AKA Dr. Gravity (born August 5, 1971) is an American former skeleton racer who has competed since 2002. He won three medals at the FIBT World Championships with two silvers (Men's skeleton: 2007, Mixed team: 2007) and a bronze (Mixed team: 2009). Early life and education Bernotas is from West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Malvern Preparatory School and West Virginia University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and graduated in 1994. Matthew Antoine (born April 2, 1985) is an American skeleton racer who has competed since 2003. Antoine graduated from the California University of Pennsylvania in 2009 with a degree in sports management, wellness and fitness. Antoine won gold in the mixed team event at the FIBT World Championships 2012 in Lake Placid, New York. His best World Cup race finish was first at Lake Placid in December 2013. Jeffrey Thomas "Jeff" Pain (born December 14, 1970) is an American-born Canadian former skeleton racer who competed from 1995 to 2010. He is regarded as one of the most successful male competitors in the history of the Canadian skeleton program. He was born in Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from the University of British Columbia, where he was a member of the school's varsity track and field team. Pain has had a 15-year career with 22 World Cup podium finishes in 74 starts, including ten wins, 3 World Championship medals, and an Olympic silver medal. Kristan Bromley (born 7 March 1972) is a retired British skeleton racer who has competed since 1996. He won the gold medal in the men's event at the 2008 FIBT World Championships in Altenberg, Germany. This was Great Britain's first gold medal at the FIBT World Championships since 1965. Competing in four Winter Olympics, Bromley's best finish was fifth in the men's skeleton event at Turin in 2006. He has twice won the men's overall Skeleton World Cup title (2003-4, 2007-08).
