2008 Swansea Council Election
The fourth election to the City and County of Swansea Council was held in May 2008. It was preceded by the 2004 election and followed by the 2012 election. Overview All council seats were up for election. These were the fourth elections held following local government reorganisation and the abolition of West Glamorgan County Council. The Council remained under no overall control, the Labour Party having lost their majority on the authority in 2004 Candidates The contests were fought by most of the main parties, with Labour and the Conservatives contesting all but one or two of the seats. Penclawdd (electoral Ward)
Pen-clawdd (formerly Penclawdd) is an electoral ward in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, UK. It is named after the village of Penclawdd, which falls within the ward. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following areas: Blue Anchor, Penclawdd, Llanmorlais, Crofty and Wernffrwd in the parliamentary constituency of Gower. The ward is mainly rural and is fairly sparsely populated. It is bounded by Gower to the south west, and Fairwood; Gowerton to the east and the Loughor estuary to the north. Oystermouth (electoral Ward)
Oystermouth (Welsh: ''Ystumllwynarth'') is a village (and former electoral ward) in the district of Mumbles, Swansea, Wales. It is part of the Mumbles community (civil parish). Etymology Samuel Lewis and Nicholas Carlisle both state that the original Welsh name was "Caer Tawy" (the Caer of the river Tawe). Thomas Morgan noted that the modern Welsh name, Ystumllwynarth was also found in early Medieval Welsh literature. Morgan derives this name from ''Ystum Lluarth'' which he defined as a "place of entrenchment on a hill" adding that the English name Oystermouth, is both a corruption of the existing Welsh name and a folk etymology connected to the locality's famous oyster beds. History When the parish church was restored in 1860, fragments of Roman tessellated pavement were found in various parts of the churchyard. Mike Hedges (politician)
Michael John Hedges MS (born 8 July 1956) is a Welsh Labour politician, who been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for the constituency of Swansea East since the 2011 Senedd election. Personal life Hedges has lived in Morriston for many years but was born in the Plasmarl area of Swansea. He is married to Anne and has a daughter, Catrin, who attends Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe. He attended Plasmarl, Parklands and Penlan Schools, and went on to higher education at Swansea University and Cardiff University. Active in local sport, Hedges has been a football referee and coach, and was secretary of Morriston town for several years. Hedges is president of Ynystawe Cricket and Football Club and is a social member of both Morriston RFC and Glais RFC.
