2008 Monte Paschi Eroica
The 2008 Monte Paschi Eroica was the second edition of the Monte Paschi Eroica, later named ''Strade Bianche'', held on 8 March 2008. It is a professional road bicycle race in Tuscany, Italy, starting in Gaiole in Chianti and finishing in Siena. The race was 181 km, including seven sectors of ''strade bianche'', totaling 56,1 km of gravel road. Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara won the race in a two-man sprint with Alessandro Ballan. The duo had caught early Canadian escapee Ryder Hesjedal at nine kilometer from the finish and headed into Siena's Piazza del Campo, where Cancellara took the win after hitting the front with 150 metres to go. 63 riders finished. In 2008, for the first time in ten years, two Grand Tours were won by one rider, the Spaniard Alberto Contador. Alessandro Ballan succeeded fellow Italian Paolo Bettini as World Champion, winning the road race in his home country, where Varese hosted the World Championships for the second time in history. Bettini and German sprinter Erik Zabel were among the most prominent riders to quit after this season, while Mario Cipollini made a brief comeback in the early months of the year. Despite even tighter controls and warnings concerning doping, and the introduction of the blood passport by the UCI, several major races, including the Giro and Tour were faced with positive tests. Pavel Aleksandrovich Brutt (russian: Павел Александрович Брутт; born 29 January 1982) is a Russian former professional track and road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2001 and 2017 for six different teams. Niklas Axelsson
Niklas Axelsson (born 15 May 1972) is a Swedish former professional road racing cyclist. Axelsson finished sixth during the 1999 Giro d'Italia and third in the 2000 edition of Giro di Lombardia. He is banned from sports for life for doping. Doping Axelsson tested positive for EPO in the 2001 UCI Road World Championships in Lisbon and later admitted his guilt. He was suspended for four years by the Swedish Cycling Federation (SCF) but made an early comeback in 2004. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2007 but made a complete recovery. Baden Cooke (born 12 October 1978) is an Australian retired professional racing cyclist, who competed professionally between 2000 and 2013. Piazza Del Campo
Piazza del Campo is the main public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity. The Palazzo Pubblico and its Torre del Mangia, as well as various ''palazzi signorili'' surround the shell-shaped piazza. Eric Ryder Hesjedal (; born December 9, 1980) is a Canadian retired professional racing cyclist who competed in both mountain biking and road racing between 1998 and 2016. Hesjedal won a silver medal at the 1998 Junior, 2001 Under-23, and Elite world championship in mountain biking. He turned professional with in 2004 after several years with the continental team. Having previously finished in fifth place at the 2010 Tour de France, Hesjedal won his first and only Grand Tour at the 2012 Giro d'Italia, the first Grand Tour win by a Canadian.
