The 2008 MSBL season was the 20th season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 28 March and ended on Saturday 2 August. The finals began on Friday 8 August and ended on Saturday 6 September, when the Goldfields Giants defeated the Willetton Tigers in the MSBL Grand Final. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. The District Competition was introduced by the Western Australian Basketball Federation (WABF) as an 'elite' competition held on Friday nights, featuring eight Perth-based associations from the prominent districts of Perth, Swan Districts, Tangney/Willetton, Subiaco, East Perth, Cockburn, Stirling, and Claremont. Point (basketball)
Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. The team that has recorded the most points at the end of a game is declared that game's winner. Peter Crawford (basketball)
Peter Crawford (born 6 November 1979) is an Australian basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for the Brisbane Bullets of the National Basketball League (NBL). Playing career In 1998, Crawford was a member of the Townsville Heat's losing ABA semi-final team. Two years later, he helped the Heat win the QBL championship. At the age of 19, Crawford made his NBL debut for the Townsville Crocodiles in 1999. In 2001, he was a member of the Crocodiles' losing grand final team. In 2004, he was cut by Townsville and was picked up by the Perth Wildcats. In his first season with a Wildcats, he was named the NBL Most Improved Player. From 2007 to 2011, he played for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the State Basketball League. State Basketball League All-Star Five ...
The All-NBL1 West First Team is an annual NBL1 West honour bestowed on the best players in the league each year. Under the State Basketball League (SBL) brand, a five-player team was named every year between 2005 and 2019. Alternating between the terms "All Stars", "All Star Teams" and "All-Star Five" until 2017, in 2018 and 2019 "All-SBL First Team" was used. In 2021, an All-NBL1 West First Team was named following the league's rebranding. On a few occasions, due to the different voting systems, the Most Valuable Player has not been named in the All-Star Five / First Team. The NBL1 West Coach of the Year is an annual NBL1 West award given to the best performing head coach of the regular season. Known as the State Basketball League (SBL) Coach of the Year from 1989 to 2019, the SBL was rebranded to NBL1 West in 2021. In 2014, the Coach of the Year award for the Men's League was named in honour of John Gardiner following his death. A former Olympian, Gardiner was involved with basketball for more than 50 years as a player, coach and administrator at all levels of the game. Adam Caporn
Adam Caporn (born 16 March 1982) is an Australian basketball coach and former player. He is the assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is a former assistant coach at Saint Mary's College of California, where he also played college basketball. Born in Baldivis, Western Australia, he spent six seasons in the National Basketball League, three with the Wollongong Hawks and three for the Perth Wildcats. Playing career In 2000 and 2001, Caporn played basketball for at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) before heading to the United States to play college basketball for Saint Mary's College of California. Free Throw
In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line (informally known as the foul line or the charity stripe), a line situated at the end of the Key (basketball), restricted area. Free throws are generally awarded after a Personal foul (basketball), foul on the shooter by the opposing team, analogous to penalty shots in other team sports. Three-point Field Goal
A three-point field goal (also 3-pointer, three, or trey) is a field goal in a basketball game made from beyond the three-point line, a designated arc surrounding the basket. A successful attempt is worth three points, in contrast to the two points awarded for field goals made within the three-point line and the one point for each made free throw. Field Goal Percentage
Field goal percentage in basketball is the ratio of field goals made to field goals attempted. Its abbreviation is FG%. Although three-point field goal percentage is often calculated separately, three-point field goals are included in the general field goal percentage. Instead of using scales of 0 to 100%, the scale .000 to 1.000 is commonly used. A higher field goal percentage denotes higher efficiency. In basketball, a FG% of .500 (50%) or above is considered a good percentage, although this criterion does not apply equally to all positions. Guards usually have lower FG% than forwards and centers. Field goal percentage does not completely tell the skill of a player, but a low field goal percentage can indicate a poor offensive player or a player who takes many difficult shots. Block (basketball)
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Also, on a shooting foul, a blocked shot cannot be awarded or counted, even if the player who deflected the field goal attempt is different from the player who committed the foul.
