2008 London Marathon
The 2008 London Marathon was the 28th running of the annual marathon race in London, England, which took place on Sunday, 13 April. The elite men's race was won by Kenya's Martin Lel in a time of 2:05:15 hours and the women's race was won by Germany's Irina Mikitenko in 2:24:14. In the wheelchair races, Britain's David Weir (wheelchair athlete), David Weir (1:33:56) and Switzerland's Sandra Graf (1:48:04) won the men's and women's divisions, respectively. Graf knocked over a minute off the course record. Around 120,000 people applied to enter the race: 48,630 had their applications accepted and 35,037 started the race. Ryan Hall (runner)
Ryan Hall (born October 14, 1982, in Kirkland, Washington) is a retired American long-distance runner who holds the U.S. record in the half marathon. With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon (2:04:58 at the 2011 Boston marathon). However, this time is not eligible to be a record due to the course being point-to-point and a net-downhill course. Peter Riley (runner)
Peter Riley (born 1940) is a contemporary English poet, essayist, and editor. Riley is known as a Cambridge poet, part of the group loosely associated with J. H. Prynne which today is acknowledged as an important center of innovative poetry in the United Kingdom. Riley was an editor and major contributor to ''The English Intelligencer''. He is the author of ten books of poetry, and many small-press booklets. Richard Kiplagat (born 3 May 1984) is a Kenyan former athlete who specialised in middle-distance running. Kiplagat, who comes from Eldoret, competed mainly as a 800 metres runner. In 2008 he competed at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, where he was disqualified for running outside of his lane. Tomas Abyu
Tomas Abyu (born 5 May 1978) is an Ethiopian-born British long-distance runner. Abyu grew up in the Arsi region of Ethiopia, as a junior he trained with Gezahegne Abera. Abyu left Ethiopia where his father had been killed in the civil war. He came to the United Kingdom as a political refugee and was given asylum in 2000, becoming a British citizen in 2005. Abyu made his marathon debut in Manchester in October 2002, winning the event in 2:25:28. He transferred allegiance in 2006 becoming eligible to represent Great Britain in athletics. He improved to record a marathon personal best of 2:10:37, finishing second, at the Dublin Marathon in Oct 2007. Danny Kassap
Danny Tshindind Kassap (24 June 1982 – 2 May 2011) was a Congolese-Canadian long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon. He competed at the 2001 Jeux de la Francophonie in Canada, and subsequently settled in Toronto. Kassap worked in a fish and chips shop while pursuing a career in running. At the 2004 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which he won, he achieved his lifetime best time in the marathon, of 2:14:50 hours. Kassap also set a national record for the DR Congo when he ran the 10,000 metres in 28:57.28 minutes, achieved in July 2003 in Hamilton. He finished fifteenth in the 2008 London Marathon. Andrew Letherby (born 19 September 1973) is an Australian former long-distance runner who won a bronze medal in the marathon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Daniel ("Dan") Stephen Rowley Robinson (born 13 January 1975 in Cheltenham) is a former English long-distance runner who specialises in the marathon. He represented Great Britain in the marathon at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic games. He finished in 12th place in the 2005 World Championships and in 2006 won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. Stefano Baldini
Stefano Baldini (born 25 May 1971 in Castelnovo di Sotto, Emilia-Romagna, Italy) is a retired Italian runner who specialized in the marathon. He was the Olympic champion in Athens and was twice European champion (1998 and 2006). Biography Baldini was also a world champion in the half marathon, taking the title in Palma de Mallorca in 1996. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Baldini finished first in the men's marathon, winning a gold medal. Luke Kibet Bowen (born 12 April 1983) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon. He won the marathon race at the 2007 World Championships. Early career Kibet was born in Kaplelach village, Moiben division, Uasin Gishu District. Famed Kenyan runners Samson Kitur and Noah Ngeny come from the same area. Hendrik Ramaala (born 2 February 1972) is a South African long-distance runner. Biography Education Ramaala is a law graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand. Aleksey Vladimirovich Sokolov (russian: Алексей Владимирович Соколов) (born November 14, 1979) is a marathon runner. He represented his country at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
