The 2008 Blue Square Greyhound Derby took place during May with the final held on 31 May 2008 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner Loyal Honcho received £100,000. Race Report It took five rounds of action to narrow down the field to the final six greyhounds that would for the final of the competition race over 480 m in a chance to win the 2008 English Greyhound Derby. After finishing second to Westmead Lord in 2007, Loyal Honcho won the 2008 title in his second attempt, dominating the final. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Only four greyhounds have won the event twice, Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. Trainer Charlie Lister OBE has won the event a record seven times. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. The stadium was demolished in 2018 to clear the site for the new development; it was one of London's last remaining greyhound stadium with only Crayford and Romford left and was the third to close since the turn of the century after Catford Stadium in 2003 and Walthamstow Stadium in 2008. 2007 English Greyhound Derby
The 2007 Blue Square Greyhound Derby took place during June & July with the final being held on 7 July 2007 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner Westmead Lord received £100,000. Final result At Wimbledon (over 480 metres): Distances ½, neck, 1, short head, 1¾ (lengths) The distances between the greyhounds are in finishing order and shown in lengths. One length is equal to 0.08 of one second. Race Report The final was won by Westmead Lord in a time of 28.47 seconds. The winner, who was trained by Nick Savva and was a half brother to former two-time winner Westmead Hawk, dominated the race from the very start. 6–4 favourite Loyal Honcho improved as the race progressed, but just missed out on the ultimate prize by half a length. It was the second time that a Seamus Graham trained runner had finished second in as many years. Kinda Ready was the eventual winner, after picking up Fear Zafonic near the line. The rest of the field encountered crowding leaving the front two to battle it out. An April 2007 whelp, Kinda Ready was the youngest in the final, and was also the biggest price winner in the history of the Derby at Wimbledon. Paul Hennessy (trainer)
Paul Hennessy is an Irish greyhound trainer and thoroughbred horse trainer. He is a two-time winner of the English Greyhound Derby and a winner of the Irish Greyhound Derby and three times winner of the Scottish Greyhound Derby and is regarded as one of Ireland's leading trainers. Greyhound racing Based in Garryduff, Gowran, County Kilkenny he first gained success in the 1986 Tipperary Cup. In 1999 he reached the final of the 1999 Irish Greyhound Derby for the first time with Mr Bozz. He trained a greyhound called the Late Late Show (named after Irish talk show), and owned by TV and Radio chat show host Pat Kenny. Yarmouth Stadium
Yarmouth Stadium is a greyhound racing track located at Caister-on-Sea in the Borough of Great Yarmouth and English county of Norfolk. It is licensed by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain. Greyhound Racing takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evening. Facilities include a modern designed 'Raceview Restaurant' seating 240, several executive suites, fast food facilities and a number of bars. Charlie Lister
Charles 'Charlie' Richard Lister OBE (born 1940) is a former English greyhound trainer. He is a four times winner of the Greyhound Trainer of the Year and is regarded as one of the leading trainers of all time. He also holds the record for English Greyhound Derby wins with seven. Early life He was born in Yorkshire and used to attend coursing with his father. He then owned some greyhounds with a trainer called Joe Booth who ran on the independent circuit, known as flapping (unregulated racing). Career After learning his trade on independent tracks he applied for a National Greyhound Racing Club C-licence. He was then gained a professional trainers licence and was awarded a contract at Leicester Stadium by Mick Wheble. His first breakthroughs were with Swift Band, who won the 1981 East Anglian Derby and Glamour Hobo who finished runner up in the 1985 Scottish Greyhound Derby. Central Park Stadium formerly Sittingbourne Stadium is a greyhound racing track, and speedway track and former football stadium located in Murston, Sittingbourne, Kent, England. Scottish Greyhound Derby
The Scottish Greyhound Derby was an original classic greyhound competition held at Shawfield Stadium. Held at Carntyne Stadium from 1928 to 1968, after the closure of Carntyne the race appeared at Shawfield from 1970 until 1985. In 1988 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), moved the race to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh because they had the rights to the event and wanted it to take place at one of their tracks. After just two years it returned to Glasgow and Shawfield following the sale of Powderhall by the GRA. The 2008 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 83rd year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Summary The premier competitions were won by Loyal Honcho (2008 English Greyhound Derby) and Shelbourne Aston ( 2008 Irish Greyhound Derby) respectively. However their achievements were overshadowed by the closure of the sports leading stadium Walthamstow.The shareholders sold up and the track closed in August despite assurances from the owners in December 2007 that no deal had been made to sell the track. The track had been opened in 1933 by William Chandler and was still owned by the Chandler family but the directors of Walthamstow Stadium Limited agreed to the sale of the Company’s freehold property to a development consortium led by Yoo Capital and K W Linfoot plc.
