2008 ABA All-Star Game
The 2008 American Basketball Association All-Star Game was held at the 1,856 seat Barre Auditorium in Barre, Vermont on March 21–22, 2008, where East defeated West in style, 161–140 in front of 1,500 basketball fans. Anthony Anderson of the Manchester Millrats won the MVP award. Senegalese player Issa Konare and Chinese Sun Yue were the only foreigners of the All-Star Game. The American Basketball Association (ABA) was a major men's professional basketball league from 1967 to 1976. The ABA ceased to exist with the American Basketball Association–National Basketball Association merger in 1976, leading to four ABA teams joining the National Basketball Association (NBA) and to the introduction of the 3-point shot in the NBA in 1979. The 2006 American Basketball Association All-Star Game was held in Sunrise, Florida at the 20,737 seat BankAtlantic Center on February 11, 2006, where East defeated West, 129–127. Former NBA player Armen Gilliam who came out of retirement in 2005 to play for the Pittsburgh Xplosion, was named the Most Valuable Player, though the main attraction of the All-Star Game was Tim Hardaway who had already participated in 5 NBA All-Star Games in his career. Prior to the game, Randy Gill won the 3-Point Shootout, and Ray Cunningham won the Slam Dunk Contest. Both teams were coached by former NBA players. The East team was coached by Greg Graham of the Indiana Alley Cats, while the West team was coached Gary Grant of the SoCal Legends. The Long Beach Breakers were a minor league baseball team that played at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. They played in the independent Western Baseball League since 1978 and were not associated with any Major League Baseball team. The Breakers were founded in 2001 and owned by Jerry Schoenfeld a California Businessman, The Breakers won a league championship in their 2001 inaugural season. They played for two seasons and were coached by Dodger Catcher Steve Yeager. Beijing Olympians
The Beijing Olympians or Beijing Aoshen Olympians or Beijing Aoshen () was a Chinese professional men's basketball team that formerly played in the Chinese Basketball Association and the West Coast Pro Basketball League. They have also played in the American Basketball Association. Some sources refer to them (slightly ungrammatically) as the Beijing Olympicians. They should not be confused with the Beijing Ducks, which is a different team based in Beijing. In the 2003–04 season, they finished 7th out of 12 teams in the CBA regular season, and were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Jiangsu Dragons. They were disqualified from play for the 2004–05 season (see below), and although it was intended that they would return for the 2005–06 season, negotiations to rejoin the league broke down at the end of June 2005. Will Voigt
William Voigt (born August 18, 1976) is an American basketball coach who last served as head coach of Zamalek of the Egyptian Basketball Super League. As the head coach, he led the Nigerian team to its first ever AfroBasket title in 2015, where they defeated Angola in the finals to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Early life Voigt grew up in Cabot, Vermont and attended Cabot High School, where he played varsity basketball and soccer. He attended Pomona College in California, lettering in soccer, and graduating with a degree in political science. Coaching career During college, Voigt landed an internship with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers. After graduation, he became a video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs, and a year later entered the college coaching ranks taking on an assistant role with Texas under Rick Barnes. The Montreal Matrix were an American Basketball Association team based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The team's first season was in 2005–06 and their home court was the Centre Pierre Charbonneau. The team was known as the Montreal Royal during the 2007–08 season, before returning to its original name. History The Matrix reached the playoffs in their first season of play. Charles Auguste Fortier (born August 4, 1892 in Rockland, Ontario) was a Canadians, Canadian ice hockey, hockey left wing who signed a contract with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League during the training camp prior to the 1923-24 NHL season, 1923-24 season but then opted to remain an amateur, and thus never played in the NHL. Playing career Fortier played in the Lower Ottawa Valley Hockey Association, the Ottawa City Hockey League (at the senior level) and the Hull-Ottawa Senior Hockey League. The Jersey Express is a team in the American Basketball Association based in Paterson, New Jersey. The team was formed in 2005 as the Newark Express. Marsha Blount is the owner of the team. Inaugural season (2005–06) The Express ended the regular season on March 5, 2006, after losing an away game to the Buffalo Rapids. Their record for the regular season was 14-16 and they finished third in the Roger Brown Division behind the Harlem Strong Dogs and the Strong Island Sound. Halifax Rainmen
The Halifax Rainmen were a professional basketball team based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They played in the Atlantic Division of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) and their home games took place at the Scotiabank Centre, formerly known as the Halifax Metro Centre. Andre Levingston was the owner of the Rainmen since he helped establish the team in 2006. The team played their first season in the American Basketball Association (ABA). However, after becoming unhappy with the ABA, they moved to the Premier Basketball League (PBL) for the next three seasons. In 2011, they joined the NBL Canada as one of the original seven teams.
