2007–08 Isle Of Man League
The Isle of Man League 2007–08 (known as the Sure Mobile Premier League for sponsorship reasons) was the ninety-ninth such league competition on the Isle of Man. Football in the Isle of Man is played at an amateur level. There are two tiers of men's football, consisting of 27 clubs. There are six senior cup competitions – the Manx FA Cup, Railway Cup, Hospital Cup, Woods Cup, Paul Henry Gold Cup and the Charity Shield. Each club has a reserve team in the Isle of Man Football Combination, and the Junior Cup for the reserve teams. There is also the Cowell Cup an annual Under-19 tournament. There is one tier of women's football. The Isle of Man national football team is not affiliated with UEFA or FIFA. Isle Of Man Football League
The Isle of Man Football League is the senior football league on the Isle of Man and is run by the Isle of Man Football Association. Although the league is affiliated with The Football Association, it does not form a part of the English football league system. History The league's representative XI has won the FA Inter-League Cup on two occasions. In 2006 they beat the Cambridgeshire County League XI and qualified for the 2007 UEFA Regions' Cup, being eliminated in the group stage in Czech Republic. They won the Inter-League Cup again in 2013, but again were eliminated in the group stage of the Regions Cup, this time in Slovakia. Malew ( ; gv, Malew) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the south of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Rushen. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Malew is now covered by the town of Castletown. As a result, there is a small exclave of the parish district which includes Scarlett point. Other settlements in the parish include Ballasalla, Derbyhaven and St Mark's. Local government For the purposes of local government, most of the historic parish forms a single parish district with five elected Commissioners. Onchan (; glv, Kione Droghad) is a village in the parish of Onchan on the Isle of Man. It is at the north end of Douglas Bay. Administratively a district, it has the second largest population of settlements on the island, after Douglas, with which it forms a conurbation. In Manx the name for the village is ''Kione Droghad'' meaning "bridge end". Early history In the 1890s a 5,000-year-old stone age axe was found in the Cassa Field by Onchan wetlands. In the Viking reign Onchan became part of Middle sheading. The name of the village is identified with St Connachan who was Bishop of Sodor and Man in 540 and the church named after him, Kirk Coonachan. An early name for the village is gv, Kiondroghad which literally translated means "bridgehead". The earliest written record of Kiondroghad was in the 1643 Manorial Roll, when it was very small. Marown ( , rhymes with "gown"; gv, Marooney) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is the only landlocked parish on the Island. It is located in the centre of the island, in the sheading of Middle, though historically, from 1796 until 1986, it was in the sheading of Glenfaba. Settlements in the parish include Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Ayre ( ; gv, Inver Ayre) is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located in the north of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) and consists of the three historic parishes of Andreas, Bride and (Kirk Christ) Lezayre. The town of Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Lezayre, and Maughold in the sheading of Garff). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Other settlements in the sheading include Glen Auldyn and Sulby (both in the parish of Lezayre). Etymology The derivation of the word ''ayre'' is from Old Norse "eyrr", meaning a shingle beach. It refers to a storm beach forming a narrow spit of shingle or sand cutting across the landward and seaward ends of a shallow bay.
