2007 Stirling Council Election
Elections to Stirling Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using seven new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004. Each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The new wards replaced 22 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Stirling (council Area)
The Stirling council area ( sco, Stirlin; gd, Sruighlea) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, and has a population of about ( estimate). It was created under the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act 1994 with the boundaries of the Stirling district of the former Central local government region, and it covers most of Stirlingshire (except Falkirk) and the south-western portion of Perthshire. Both counties were abolished for local government purposes under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. The administrative centre of the area is the city of Stirling, with the headquarters at Old Viewforth. The area borders the council areas of Clackmannanshire (to the east), North Lanarkshire (to the south), Falkirk (to the south east), Perth and Kinross (to the north and north east), Argyll and Bute (to the north and north west), and both East and West Dunbartonshire to Stirling's southwest. Steven Paterson
Steven Alexander Paterson (born 25 April 1975) is a former Scottish National Party (SNP) politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Stirling between 2015 and 2017. He was not re-selected by the SNP to contest the Stirling seat at the 2019 general election. Early life and education Paterson was born in Stirling Royal Infirmary on 25 April 1975. He is the elder of two children born to Peter Paterson and Janice Paterson (''née'' McGill). His father was an English teacher at St Modan's High School in Stirling as well as a local historian and his mother was a nurse with the local health board. Paterson was educated at Cambusbarron Primary School and Stirling High School. Stirling North (ward)
Stirling North is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the Stirling Council. Originally known as Castle from its creation in 2007, it returned three councillors and covered northern parts of the small city of Stirling, including Causewayhead, Cornton, Raploch and the town centre, as well as Stirling Castle from which the name derived. A 2017 national boundary review saw the ward become larger; this new territory consisted largely of an uninhabited area on the western slopes of the Ochil Hills and a rural area south of Blairlogie, but also incorporating the Cambuskenneth and Riverside neighbourhoods, with an increase in the electorate and an additional seat. It was also re-named at that time to the more descriptive Stirling North title. In 2019, the ward had a population of 16,476. First Past The Post
In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. As a winner-take-all method, FPTP often produces disproportional results (when electing members of an assembly, such as a parliament) in the sense that political parties do not get representation according to their share of the popular vote. Local Government In Scotland
Local government in Scotland comprises thirty-two local authorities, commonly referred to as councils. Each council provides public services, including education, social care, waste management, libraries and planning. Councils receive the majority of their funding from the Scottish Government, but operate independently and are accountable to their local electorates. Councils raise additional income via the Council Tax, a locally variable domestic property tax, and Business rates, a non-domestic property tax. Councils are made up of councillors who are directly elected by the residents of the area they represent. Each council area is divided into a number of wards, and three or four councillors are elected for each ward. There are currently 1,227 elected councillors in Scotland.
