2007 Ovation Awards
The nominees for the 2007 Ovation Awards were announced on September 24, 2007. The awards were presented for excellence in stage productions in the Los Angeles area from September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007 based upon evaluations from members of the Los Angeles theater community. The winners were announced on November 12, 2007 in a ceremony hosted by Neil Patrick Harris at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, California. Board of Governors Awards The Los Angeles Stage Alliance presented three non-competitive awards for meritorious service to theater in Los Angeles. The Board of Governors Award for Career Achievement was given to Annette Bening. The James A. Doolittle Leadership in Theatre Award was given to the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles. And The Actors Fund was honored with the Community Outreach Award. ''Tryst'' is a romantic play set in Edwardian London written by British playwright Karoline Leach. ''Tryst'' had its debut on April 6, 2006 at the Promenade Theatre in New York. ''Tryst'' has been described as a "subversion of Edwardian melodrama", in which the stereotypical actions and responses of the characters are used to ask usually unasked questions about the motivations and power-relationships of the characters. The 2006 off-Broadway premiere starred Maxwell Caulfield and Amelia Campbell. The play was then produced in 2007 at the Black Dahlia Theater in Los Angeles, starring Gabriel Olds and Deborah Puette. The play got positive reviews, and was nominated for an Ovation for Best Production, Intimate Theater. ''The Long Christmas Ride Home'' is a one-act play written by Paula Vogel. It dramatises a road trip by two parents and their three young children to visit grandparents for Christmas dinner, and the emotional turmoil that they undergo. A significant element of the production schema is a Western contemporary employment of ''bunraku''. Production history The play, under the direction of Oskar Eustis, premiered at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island on May 16, 2003 as a co-production between Trinity Repertory Company and the Long Wharf Theatre. The play featured ''shamisen'' player Sumie Kaneko and puppets by Basil Twist. The play opened off-Broadway in November 2003 at the Vineyard Theatre, directed by Mark Brokaw. The Celebration Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre company in Los Angeles, founded in 1982. The company is located in West Hollywood, on the west end of Theatre Row, and specializes in works representing the LGBTQ+ experience. History Celebration Theatre was founded in 1982 by Charles Rowland, who leased a storefront in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, to start a company dedicated to producing gay-themed material. The Bacchae
''The Bacchae'' (; grc-gre, Βάκχαι, ''Bakchai''; also known as ''The Bacchantes'' ) is an ancient Greek tragedy, written by the Athenian playwright Euripides during his final years in Macedonia, at the court of Archelaus I of Macedon. It premiered posthumously at the Theatre of Dionysus in 405 BC as part of a tetralogy that also included ''Iphigeneia at Aulis'' and ''Alcmaeon in Corinth'', and which Euripides' son or nephew is assumed to have directed. It won first prize in the City Dionysia festival competition. ''Jitney'' is a play by American playwright August Wilson. The eighth in his " Pittsburgh Cycle", this play is set in a worn-down gypsy cab station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in early autumn 1977. The play premiered on Broadway in 2017. Productions ''Jitney'' was written in 1979 and first produced in 1982 at the small Allegheny Repertory Theatre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When Wilson took his mother to see that production they arrived by jitney. That was followed by a separate production at Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. Kirk Douglas Theatre
The Kirk Douglas Theatre is a 317-seat theater located in Culver City, California. Since 2004, it has been operated by the Center Theatre Group. History Built in 1946, as a Streamline Moderne movie palace with a seating capacity of 1,160 (on a stadium plan with no overhanging balcony), the Culver Theatre (as it was previously named) was located near the Columbia Pictures studio lot (then the lot for MGM).
