Ecuador ( ; ; Quechua: ''Ikwayur''; Shuar: ''Ecuador'' or ''Ekuatur''), officially the Republic of Ecuador ( es, República del Ecuador, which literally translates as "Republic of the Equator"; Quechua: ''Ikwadur Ripuwlika''; Shuar: ''Ekuatur Nunka''), is a country in northwestern South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. The legacy of both empires is reflected in Ecuador's ethnically diverse population, with most of its mill ... 2007 Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly Election
Constituent Assembly elections were held in Ecuador on 30 September 2007. A Constituent Assembly was established following an April referendum on doing so. A total of 130 delegates were elected; 24 members from national lists, 100 elected from provincial constituencies and six for overseas votes. The large number of candidates and lists (26 national lists, 428 provincial lists, 44 emigrant lists) caused the elections to be the most complex in Ecuador's history. Although polls indicated that Correa's PAIS Alliance would win a plurality in the election, but not a majority, PAIS won a landslide victory, winning 80 of the 130 seats, giving the party the power to dismiss Congress and make the substantial constitutional reforms for which Correa has been calling. PAIS won all six foreign seats. The Constituent Assembly was to be set up on 31 October 2007 and have six months (with a possible extension of two months) to draft a new constitution, which will then have to be ratified in a re ... PAIS Alliance
PAIS Alliance is a centre-left social democratic political party in Ecuador. In 2016, it had 979,691 members. Founded by Rafael Correa in April 2006, the party soon found success amid the "pink tide" period in Latin America. The party's early period in power (2007–2017) is known as the Correa era, named after the longtime leader Correa, who was also the President of Ecuador. Under Correa, PAIS was more left-leaning and followed a form of anti-imperialism, Bolivarianism, democratic socialism, left-wing populism, left-wing nationalism, and progressivism, as part of socialism of the 21st century, which was followed by like-minded parties in Bolivia and Venezuela, which became known as Correism. The party had majority governments throughout the period in power and also had a supermajority from 2013 to 2017. During this period, Correa's administration increased government spending, reducing poverty, raised the minimum wage, and increased the standard of living in Ecuador. Between 20 ... Congress Of Ecuador
The National Congress (Spanish: ''Congreso Nacional)'' was the unicameral legislative branch of the government of Ecuador prior to November 2007. Under the 1998 Constitution, Congress met in Quito and was made up of 100 deputies ''(diputados).'' Each of the country's 22 provinces returned a minimum of two deputies plus one additional seat for every 200,000 inhabitants. It was dissolved on 29 November 2007 by the Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly and replaced by the National Assembly of Ecuador under the 2008 Constitution. Its demise came when it was already weakened by the disfavorable perception of the Ecuadorian public opinion, which for decades saw it as a corrupt and incompetent entity, as well as a venue for violent disputes between its members and political intrigues, such as the removal of Presidents Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz in 1997 and Lucio Gutiérrez in 2005. Eligibility To serve as a congressional deputy, the following requirements had to be met: *Ecuadorian citizen b ...
