2007 Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly Election
Constituent Assembly elections were held in Ecuador on 30 September 2007. A Constituent Assembly was established following an April referendum on doing so. A total of 130 delegates were elected; 24 members from national lists, 100 elected from provincial constituencies and six for overseas votes. The large number of candidates and lists (26 national lists, 428 provincial lists, 44 emigrant lists) caused the elections to be the most complex in Ecuador's history. Although polls indicated that Correa's PAIS Alliance would win a plurality in the election, but not a majority, PAIS won a landslide victory, winning 80 of the 130 seats, giving the party the power to dismiss Congress and make the substantial constitutional reforms for which Correa has been calling. The Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly was a 2007–2008 constitutional assembly in Ecuador, which drafted the 2008 Constitution of Ecuador, approved via the Ecuadorian constitutional referendum, 2008. On 30 September 2007 an election for a constituent assembly was held in Ecuador following the referendum on this issue held on 15 April 2007. 130 delegates were elected: 24 members from national lists, 100 representing the provinces and six for emigrants living outside Ecuador. Democratic People's Movement
The Democratic People's Movement ( es, link=no, Movimiento Popular Democrático, MPD) was the electoral wing of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Ecuador (affiliated with the ICMLPO-U&S) and a political party in Ecuador since 1978. At the legislative elections of 20 October 2002, the party won at least 3 out of 100 seats. It again won 3 seats at the 2006 elections, where its presidential candidate Luis Villacis came in 9th place with 1.33% of the vote. In the 2009 National Assembly elections it won 5 out of 124 seats with 4.05% of the vote. Within 26 years of its founding, the MPD reached 29 national and provincial deputies, a prefect, 33 provincial councilors, 21 mayors and council chairmen, 285 councilors, and 313 parish council members. The Christian Democratic Union ( es, Unión Demócrata Cristiana, ''UDC), formerly known as Popular Democracy ( es, Democracia Popular, DP) was a Christian democratic political party in Ecuador. It was formed in the 1970s by centrist Christian Democrats who had left the Social Christian Party and the left wing of the Conservative Party who were oriented towards Liberation theology. It officially registered as a political party in 1979. It was originally considered a centre-left party. Later in the 1990s, it shifted to the centre-right.
