The 2006 United States Senate election in North Dakota was held November 7, 2006. Incumbent Democratic-NPL U.S. Senator Kent Conrad won re-election to a fourth term. Major candidates Democratic-NPL * Kent Conrad, incumbent U.S. Senator Republican *Dwight Grotberg Campaign Popular Republican governor John Hoeven was heavily recruited by prominent national Republicans, including Karl Rove and Dick Cheney to run against Conrad. SurveyUSA polls showed that both Conrad and Hoeven had among the highest approval ratings of any Senators and governors in the nation. A poll conducted by PMR (8/26-9/3 MoE 3.9) for '' The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead'' had as result for a hypothetical matchup: Hoeven-35%, Conrad-27%, Uncommitted-38%. The 2010 United States Senate election in North Dakota took place on November 2, 2010, alongside other elections to the United States Senate in other states as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. Incumbent Democratic-NPL U.S. senator Byron Dorgan announced in January 2010 that he would not seek reelection, leading to the first open seat election since 1992. Republican governor John Hoeven won the seat in a landslide, taking 76.1% of the vote, sweeping every county in the state, and becoming North Dakota's first Republican senator since 1987. The 2006 U.S. House of Representatives election for the state of North Dakota's at-large congressional district was held November 7, 2006. The incumbent, Democratic-NPL Congressman Earl Pomeroy was re-elected to his eighth term, defeating Republican candidate Matt Mechtel. Only Pomeroy filed as a Dem-NPLer, and the endorsed Republican candidate was Matt Mechtel of Fargo, North Dakota. Pomeroy and Mechtel won the primary elections for their respective parties. Roland Clifford Riemers (born May 15, 1943) is an American perennial candidate best known for winning the 1996 North Dakota Democratic presidential primary. Early life and career Riemers was born in 1943 in Lake City, Minnesota. He attended San Antonio College, received his AS in nursing from Anoka-Ramsey Community College in 1973, his BS in industrial technology from the University of North Dakota in 1984, and attended but did not graduate from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1998 and 1999. Gaylord Kent Conrad (born March 12, 1948) is a former American politician who was a United States Senator from North Dakota. He is a member of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, the North Dakota affiliate of the Democratic Party. First elected to the Senate in 1986, he served as chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee for 12 years. On January 18, 2011, Conrad announced that he was retiring from politics and would not run for reelection in 2012.
