General elections were held on the Isle of Man on Thursday, 23 November 2006. The voting age was lowered to 16 at this election. As usual, the election was dominated by independents, who took 21 of the 24 seats. House Of Keys
The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. The Manx-language name of the House remains ('The Four and Twenty'). Governance Members are known as ''Members of the House of Keys'' (MHKs). Brenda Cannell
Brenda Josephine Cannell MHK (born 2 July 1952) is the current member of the House of Keys for Douglas East. She was first elected in the 1996 general election. Career Cannell was a councillor for the Derby Ward of Douglas Town Council from 1992 to '95, serving as Chairman of the Public Health and Housing Committee (1993–94) and sitting on various other committees and groups. She also worked for the Isle of Man branch of Friends of the Earth. In 1996 she was elected as an MHK, and since that time has been Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority from 2002 to '04, and then Chairman of the Planning Committee (2004-2005), amongst many other roles. She was re-elected in 2001, 2006, and 2011. Garff
Garff () is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of Lonan and Maughold. Before 1796 it also included the parish of Onchan. Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. The town of Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Maughold, and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Geoff Cannell
Geoffrey Thornton Cannell (July 1, 1942 – September 24, 2007) was a Member of the House of Keys (MHK) and a sports broadcaster in the Isle of Man. Biography Geoff Cannell was born on July 1, 1942, in Douglas and educated on the Island. Apart from his brief spell in the House of Keys and another in the Tourist Board from 1978 he worked for Manx Radio as press officer, sports editor and news editor. He generally is well known for covering major sports events, especially the TT and also for his coverage of Tynwald. In 1998, he was elected the MHK for Onchan, following Ray Kniveton's elevation to the Legislative Council. John Shimmin
John Shimmin (born 1 July 1960) is a former Member of the House of Keys for Douglas West. Early life Shimmin was born in Douglas in 1960 and educated at St Ninian's High School and the Worcester College of Higher Education. He was then a teacher (Physical Education, Mathematics, General Studies) from 1982 in several areas of the UK - Crewe, Tamworth, Knowsley before returning to teach in Douglas (St Ninian’s High School) where he was also Head of Year from 1989-96 until entering politics. Political career Shimmin was elected as MHK for Douglas West in 1996 at his first attempt. He became Chairman of the Isle of Man Post Office in 1999 before becoming Minister of Transport in 2002. Charles Geoffrey "Geoff" Corkish MBE MLC (born 25 May 1953) is a Manx politician, who is currently a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas West. He was elected at the 2006 General Election, topping the polls beating Home Affairs Minister and Chief Minister candidate John Shimmin and former MHK Geoff Cannell. Mr Corkish has stated his opposition to social media and a belief that forums that do not support the Manx Government should be banned. Bill Malarky
William Mackay Malarkey (18 June 1951– 20 February 2020) was a Manx politician, who was elected Liberal Vannin MHK for Douglas South but later defected from the party and sat as an independent. In the 2011 general election he lost his seat to Liberal Vannin candidate Kate Beecroft. He was re-elected at a by-election in May 2015 as an independent candidate, and retained his seat for Douglas South in September 2016. Bill Malarkey died on 20 February 2020. He had been suffering from cancer for some time. Career At the 2006 Manx general election, Malarkey was elected as the Liberal Vannin Party Member of the House of Keys for Douglas South, alongside David Cretney who was elected for the Manx Labour Party. David Cretney
David Clifford Cretney (born 15 January 1954) is a former Manx politician. He was, until March 2014, Minister of Infrastructure in the Isle of Man Government, and had formerly headed the Departments of Community, Culture & Leisure, Trade & Industry, and Tourism & Leisure. He was a Member of the House of Keys for the Manx Labour Party, representing Douglas South from 1985. He has been a member of the upper house, the Legislative Council since 2015. Before going into politics, Cretney was a shop manager (1977–85) and he was also a businessman in the period 1985–2012. In December 2012 and early January 2013 he closed down his two bargain-basement retail outlets having chosen not to renew the leases on either of his premises. John Houghton (Isle Of Man)
John Ramsey Houghton MHK (born 1958/1959 in Douglas, Isle of Man) is a former Isle of Man politician who served as Member of the House of Keys for Douglas North until losing his seat in the 2016 Manx General Election. He has two daughters. Political career Houghton is an outspoken critic of the Isle of Man Constabulary and its former Chief Constable, Mike Culverhouse. During the 'Manx Bugging Scandal' in 2000, he publicly supported former Deputy Chief Constable Neil Kinrade. Houghton previously served as a Commandant of the Special Constabulary and Chairman of the Civil Service Commission. In 2009, Houghton objected to the Gender Recognition Bill as he believed new laws to protect the rights of transsexuals living on the Isle of Man would "defy common decency". Robert "Bill" William Henderson MLC RMN (born 28 December 1961) is a Manx legislator who, after winning a 1998 by-election, represented the constituency of Douglas North in the House of Keys, the directly elected lower branch of Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament. In 2010, he was elected to the upper house, the Legislative Council; he was re-elected in 2015 and again in 2020. A native of the Isle of Man capital, Douglas, Henderson was educated at Ballakermeen and St Ninians High Schools, gained a Professional Diploma in Management from the Open University and followed a career in nursing before going into politics. He is also a member of the Transport & General Workers Union and the Celtic League.
