The Italian general election of 2006 took place on 9–10 April 2006. 2006 Italian General Election
The 2006 Italian general election was held on 9 and 10 April 2006. Romano Prodi, leader of the centre-left coalition The Union, narrowly defeated the incumbent Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the centre-right coalition House of Freedoms. Initial exit polls suggested a victory for Prodi, but the results narrowed as the count progressed. On 11 April 2006, Prodi declared victory; Berlusconi never conceded defeat and an ensuing dispute formed. Preliminary results showed The Union leading the House of Freedoms in the Chamber of Deputies, with 340 seats to 277, thanks to obtaining a majority bonus (actual votes were distributed 49.81% to 49.74%). One more seat is allied with The Union (Aosta Valley) and 7 more seats in the foreign constituency. Social Alternative ( it, Alternativa Sociale) was a coalition of far-right political parties in Italy. History The coalition grew from Social Action, which was founded by Benito Mussolini's granddaughter Alessandra Mussolini after she left the National Alliance due to their attempts to move away from the party's fascist past. The group was committed to a strong Italian nationalism that celebrated and glorified its past, and has been particularly critical of Gianfranco Fini's modernisation of the right. Sergio Ferrero (21 December 1926 – 12 August 2008) was an Italian novelist. Born in Turin, Ferrero made his literary debut at 40 years old, with the novel ''Gloria''. In 1971, he was a finalist at the Strega Prize with the novel ''Il giuoco sul ponte''. After a 16-year hiatus, he reprised his literary activities in 1987. In 1996, Ferrero won the Bagutta Prize for the novel ''Gli occhi del padre''. During his life, Ferrero collaborated as an editor with various newspapers and journals, and also worked as an antiquarian. He died on 12 August 2008 in Lezzeno, where he was spending his holidays.
