2006 Ealing London Borough Council Election
Elections for Ealing Council in London were held on 4 May 2006. The 2006 United Kingdom local elections took place on the same day. The Conservatives gained control of the borough from the Labour Party, who themselves had been in control since 1994. The Conservatives had campaigned on opposition to the proposed West London Tram, and this opposition was claimed to be a factor in the outcome, though Labour had incurred losses much further afield and the proposed tram would have run the length of the Uxbridge Road which only passed through about half of the borough's wards. Turnout was 37.69%. Results summary Out of a total of 69 seats, the Conservative party got elected in 37, whilst Labour candidates were elected in 27 seats. Ealing London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Ealing in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London. History There have previously been a number of local authorities responsible for the Ealing area. The current local authority was first elected in 1964, a year before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the London Borough of Ealing on 1 April 1965. 2006 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local government elections took place in England (only) on Thursday 4 May 2006. Polling stations were open between 7:00 and 22:00. All London borough council seats were up for election, as well as a third of the seats on each of the metropolitan borough councils, and a third of some unitary authorities and shire districts. Several councils elected half of their seats: these were Adur, Cheltenham, Fareham, Gosport, Hastings, Nuneaton and Bedworth, and Oxford. Local elections follow a four-year cycle, and the 2006 election was the follow-on from the 2002 elections. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ealing Southall since winning the seat at a by-election in 2007. Early life and background Virendra Kumar Sharma was born on 5 April 1947 in Mandhali, Nawanshahr in the Punjab Province of British India (now Mandhali, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, Punjab, India) into a Punjabi Hindu Brahmin family and received his education at the London School of Economics on a trade union scholarship. In addition to English, Sharma is fluent in his native Indian languages of Hindi and Punjabi. Sharma came to Hanwell, Ealing, West London from India in 1968 and became a bus conductor on the 207 route, later working as a day services manager for people with learning disabilities in Hillingdon.
