The 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup was a horse racing, horse race which took place at Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham on Friday 17 March 2006. It was the 78th running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and it was won by War of Attrition. The winner was ridden by Conor O'Dwyer and trained by Mouse Morris. The pre-race favourite Beef Or Salmon finished eleventh. For the first time in the race's history the first three finishers – War of Attrition, Hedgehunter and Forget the Past – were all trained in Ireland. Mick Fitzgerald
Michael Fitzgerald (born 10 May 1970) is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey and current television racing pundit. Fitzgerald rode for the majority of his career in Great Britain and less often Ireland. Career as a Jockey Mick Fitzgerald's career lasted for over 15 years. After experience on the Pony racing circuit in Ireland he began riding out for Richard Lister, a local flat trainer in County Wexford, at the age of 16. This was followed by a move to the Curragh to ride out for John Hayden. Once he had left school at 18, a growth spurt led to an increase in weight forcing a switch to National Hunt racing. Fitzgerald's first National Hunt yards were in South West England with John Jenkins and Richard Tucker. Sue Smith (horse Racing)
Sue Smith (born Sue Maslen on 23 February 1948) is a British horse trainer. Background Smith was originally from West Sussex. Her father owned racehorses at the time and she would ride them out at Epsom. She had the distinction of participating in Britain's initial ladies' race. In her youth, she was an international show jumper. Training Smith trains at Craiglands Farm near Bingley Moor, in West Yorkshire. The farm consists of 150 acres and facilities for 55 horses. Her first winner came in 1990 when African Safari won a three-runner chase at Ascot. He had been purchased at the Ascot Sales for 4,300 guineas. She received her full licence in 1990. Robert Alner
Robert Alner (21 November 1943 – 3 February 2020) was a British racehorse trainer specializing in National Hunt racing. He was based at stables at Droop, near Sturminster Newton in Dorset, England. He trained the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Cool Dawn Cool Dawn (11 May 1988 – 25 March 2018) was a National Hunt chaser of the 1990s who went from winning minor Point-to-Point races to winning the 1998 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Blue Riband of National Hunt Racing. Andrew Thornton is a retired National Hunt racing, National Hunt jockey. Early life He was born on 28 October 1972 in Cleveland, England, Cleveland and schooled at Barnard Castle School in County Durham. He is not related to another English jockey, Robert Thornton (jockey), Robert Thornton. Riding career He rode mainly for Caroline Bailey and Seamus Mullins, he was stable jockey for Robert Alner for many years as well as riding for plenty of other trainers over the years. Thornton was one of the very few National Hunt jockeys who wore contact lenses while riding and it is for this reason that he acquired the nicknames "Lensio" and "Blindman". Philip Hobbs (born 26 July 1955) is a British racehorse trainer specializing mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at stables near Minehead, Somerset. Richard Johnson (jockey)
Richard Johnson (born 21 July 1977 in Hereford) is a retired English National Hunt jockey. Johnson is the second most prolific winner in the history of National Hunt Racing behind Sir Anthony McCoy, a long-time rival of Johnson's, with over 3500 winners. Richard Dunwoody previously held the record with 1874. Johnson holds the record for the most appearances in the Grand National and also the record for the most rides in the race without a victory.
