2005 Omagh District Council Election
Elections to Omagh District Council were held on 5 May 2005 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Omagh District Council
Omagh District Council was a local council in Northern Ireland. It merged with Fermanagh District Council in April 2015 under local government reorganisation to become Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. Its headquarters was in the town of Omagh, which is the traditional county town of Tyrone. The council area was about , making it the second largest local council area in Northern Ireland (by area) with a population of just over 50,000 (25,000 of whom lived in Omagh town). Apart from Omagh the area of the former District Council contains smaller towns including Drumquin, Dromore, Trillick, Fintona, Beragh, Carrickmore and Sixmilecross. The council was established in 1973 and originally had 20 councillors but following a review of local government boundaries in the early 1980s, the number of councillors was increased to 21. Barry McElduff
Columba Barry McElduff (; born 16 August 1966) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the West Tyrone UK parliament constituency. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Northern Ireland Assembly from its creation in 1998 until his election as MP in 2017. He resigned his seat on 16 January 2018 after publishing a video of himself balancing a Kingsmill loaf on his head, on the date of the anniversary of the Kingsmill massacre. Early life McElduff was born on 16 August 1966 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and was raised in the Aghagogan townland. He was educated at the Christian Brothers Grammar School in Omagh, before attending Queen's University Belfast. He became an Irish republican activist for Sinn Féin. Thomas Buchanan (Unionist Politician)
Thomas Buchanan (born 30 July 1963) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Buchanan has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for West Tyrone since 2003. He is also one of the DUP's members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board. He was educated at Langfield Primary School, Castlederg Secondary School, and at Omagh Technical College. In 1993 he was elected to Omagh District Council and became its youngest member and in 2004 was voted Vice Chairman. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003 being the only member from the DUP for West Tyrone until the 2007 election when he was joined by Allan Bresland who is originally from Donemana and is a member of Strabane District Council. Joe Byrne (born 29 November 1953) is a Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician, who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for West Tyrone between 1998 and 2003, and again from 2011 to 2015. Political biography After studying economics at Queen's University Belfast, Byrne became a college lecturer. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development. Omagh (; from ga, An Ómaigh , meaning 'the virgin plain') is the county town of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is situated where the rivers River Drumragh, Drumragh and Camowen River, Camowen meet to form the River Strule, Strule.
