2005 North Tyneside Council Mayoral Election
The Mayor of North Tyneside is the executive mayor of the borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. The incumbent since 2013 is Norma Redfearn. A Mayoral Referendum was held on 5 May 2016 to determine if residents wished to retain the Mayoral system or change to a Committee system. The number of votes for continuing with the mayoral system was 32,546, which was 57.5%, while 23,703 wanted a committee system - 41.8%. Referendum Elections 2002 2003 by-election A mayoral by-election was held on 12 June 2003, which was won by Linda Arkley of the Conservative Party, after Chris Morgan resigned after he was arrested in relation to police investigations over allegations of possessing indecent images of children. Norma Redfearn
Dame Norma Redfearn is a Labour politician serving as the directly-elected Mayor of North Tyneside. Early life Redfearn was born in Wallsend. The daughter of a shipyard worker, she graduated with a BPhil from Newcastle University. Teaching career Redfearn had a 30-year career in primary and secondary education. After a variety of teaching jobs, she left Wharrier Street Juniors in June 1986, where she was deputy head, to head West Walker Primary School, east of Newcastle upon Tyne. She stayed there until July 2000. In June 1989 the school won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for its playground design, presented to Redfearn and a pupil by Charles III. then the Prince of Wales. North Tyneside
North Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, England. It forms part of the greater Tyneside conurbation. North Tyneside Council is headquartered at Cobalt Park, Wallsend. Tyne And Wear
Tyne and Wear () is a metropolitan county in North East England, situated around the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear. It was created in 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972, along with five metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. It is bordered by Northumberland to the north and Durham to the south; the county boundary was formerly split between these counties with the border as the River Tyne. The former county council was based at Sandyford House. Chris Morgan (politician)
Chris Morgan was a British Conservative Party politician. He served as Mayor of North Tyneside, England, from his election in May 2002 until he resigned in April 2003. Early life Morgan was born in Wallsend, he was educated at Whitley Bay High School and studied at the University of Wales. Morgan spent his early career in accountancy with PriceWaterhouse Coopers, followed by a spell as finance director of an IT firm. North Tyneside Council Morgan was first elected to North Tyneside Council in 1996 as the Councillor for St Mary's ward. Morgan would hold the seat until his election as Mayor. Linda Arkley
Linda Arkley is a British Conservative politician who served as the elected Mayor of North Tyneside from 2003 to 2005 and from 2009 to 2013. Early life Arkley attended The Bede School in Sunderland, and studied at both Sunderland University and Northumbria University. For most of Arkley's professional career she worked as a nurse and health visitor. Political career Arkley was first elected as a councillor for Tynemouth ward in 1991, a seat she held until 1995 before regaining it in 1996. During this time she served as deputy leader of the Conservative group on North Tyneside council and in cabinet under Conservative Mayor, Chris Morgan. Gordon Johnston Adam (born 28 March 1934) is a British mining engineer and Labour Party politician. With one brief interruption, he served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for 25 years. Training and career Adam went to Carlisle Grammar School and the University of Leeds, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. John Harrison is a British Labour Party politician. He was the directly-elected Mayor of North Tyneside in England between 2005 and 2009 and is currently a Councillor on North Tyneside Council. Early life Harrison was brought up in Longbenton and started his working life as an apprentice at Parsons, before spending three years in the merchant navy. He returned to shore to work in the rail industry and up to May 2005 was working as a Health and Safety Advisor in local public transport. North Tyneside Council Harrison was first elected to North Tyneside Council in 1982 to the new seat of Weetslade ward.
