The 2005 NBL season was the 24th season of the National Basketball League. The Auckland Stars won the championship in 2005 to claim their ninth league title. National Basketball League (New Zealand)
The National Basketball League (NBL) is a men's semi-professional basketball league in New Zealand. In 1981, a group of club and provincial teams came together to create a men's national basketball league. The following year, the league was brought under the management of the New Zealand Basketball Federation. The league quickly grew in size and popularity due to the influx of sponsors and American import players. The early 1990s held dwindling fortunes for New Zealand basketball, with reduced TV coverage, sponsorships, and crowd numbers. The sport's popularity increased in the 2000s with the success of the Tall Blacks and the introduction of the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL. Casey Frank
Casey Frank (born October 23, 1977) is an American-New Zealand former professional basketball player who spent the majority of his 17-year career in the New Zealand NBL and Australian NBL. After playing four years of college basketball for Northern Arizona, Frank arrived in New Zealand in 2002 and remained in the region for the remainder of his career. He won NBL titles in 2004 and 2005 with the Auckland Stars, and in 2010 and 2011 with the Wellington Saints. Frank was named Outstanding Forward and selected to the All-Star Five three times each. He was an import with the New Zealand Breakers in their debut season until he was cut mid-season, and has also played for the Wollongong Hawks and Gold Coast Blaze in Australia. Jarrod Kenny
Jarrod Daniel Kenny (born 17 September 1985) is a New Zealand former professional basketball player. He played many seasons in the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL) for the Hawke's Bay Hawks and represented the New Zealand Tall Blacks multiple times. He won two championships in the Australian NBL with the Perth Wildcats in 2016 and 2017. Early life Kenny was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He attended Westlake Boys High School. Professional career New Zealand NBL Kenny made his debut in the New Zealand NBL for the Harbour Heat in 2004, playing a handful of games at the end of the season. He played every game and started all but two for the Heat in 2005, subsequently earning the New Zealand NBL Young Player of the Year Award. He played for the Heat until 2008. Mika Vukona
Mika John Vukona (born 13 May 1982) is a Fijian-born New Zealand former professional basketball player. Between 2003 and 2018, he spent 13 seasons with the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL and helped them win four championships. He was also a regular with the Nelson Giants in the New Zealand NBL and was a long-time New Zealand Tall Black. Early life Vukona was born in Suva, Fiji. He was adopted by his birth mother's brother, a Fijian named Clem. Clem and his a wife, a New Zealander named Marion, moved their family to New Zealand in 1987 following the Fiji coup. They settled down in the coastal city of Tauranga, Marion's hometown. Vukona attended Bethlehem College in Tauranga for both primary and secondary school. Block (basketball)
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Also, on a shooting foul, a blocked shot cannot be awarded or counted, even if the player who deflected the field goal attempt is different from the player who committed the foul. Steal (basketball)
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes a turnover by their positive, aggressive action(s). This can be done by deflecting and controlling, or by catching the opponent's pass or dribble of an offensive player. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called. Steals are credited to the defensive player who first causes the turnover, even if they do not end up with possession of the live ball. To earn a steal, the defensive player must be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. Whenever a steal is recorded by a defensive player, an offensive player must be credited as committing a turnover. In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. An assist is also credited when a basket is awarded due to defensive goaltending. There is some judgment involved in deciding whether a passer should be credited with an assist. An assist can be scored for the passer even if the player who receives the pass makes a basket after dribbling the ball for a short distance. David Cooper (basketball)
David Cooper (born 15 October 1976) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played the majority of his career in the Australian National Basketball League (ANBL). He also played in the New Zealand NBL and the South Australian State League. Playing career Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Cooper began his ANBL career in 2000 with the Brisbane Bullets. After two seasons playing for the Bullets, he joined the Victoria Giants for the 2002–03 NBL season. Following the 2002–03 season, Cooper moved to New Zealand where he joined the Manawatu Jets for the 2003 New Zealand NBL season. In basketball, a rebound, sometimes colloquially referred to as a board, is a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a routine part in the game; if a shot is successfully made possession of the ball will change, otherwise the rebound allows the defensive team to take possession. Rebounds are also given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his team's offensive end. A rebound can be grabbed by either an offensive player or a defensive player. Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. Dusty Rychart
Dusty Mike Rychart (born August 11, 1978) is an Australian-American professional basketball player for the Brisbane Capitals of the Queensland Basketball League (QBL). College career Rychart attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he walked on to the basketball team for the 1997–98 season. After redshirting his freshman year, Rychart became the backbone of the Minnesota Gophers for four seasons. While not considered flashy or high profile, Rychart was a workhorse, withstanding an academic scandal, a coaching change, sanctions, numerous players coming and going, but still managed to come out on top. Michael Bauer (born August 14, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player. In 6 EuroChallenge appearances with Oostende, Bauer averaged 11.2 points per game. Previously, he has played professionally with Deutsche Bank Skyliners in Germany and Nancy, Roanne, and Pau-Orthez in France. He debuted professionally for Luxembourg club BBC Amicale Steinsel for the 2004–05 season. He was an all-star in Ligue Nationale de Basketball in 2006 while with Roanne.
