The 2005 New Zealand Music Awards took place on 5 October 2005 at the Aotea Centre in Auckland. Awards and nominees The 'Lifetime Achievement Award' category was changed to 'Outstanding Contribution to the Growth in NZ Music on Radio'. One new category was added: 'Best Roots Album'. The Best Maori Album and Best Gospel / Christian Album categories were not awarded due to insufficient entries. Winners are listed first and highlighted in boldface. Aotea Centre
The Aotea Centre is a performing arts and events centre in Auckland, New Zealand. Located at the western edge of Aotea Square, off Queen Street, the centre provides a cultural, entertainment and conventions venue space in the heart of the city, and is managed bAuckland Unlimited(which also operates the Auckland Town Hall and The Civic, both in the vicinity of the Square). The origin of its name is Motu Aotea, the Māori name for Great Barrier Island, which is the largest offshore island of New Zealand and approximately 90 km from downtown Auckland. The main construction of the centre was finished in 1989, having cost NZ$128.5 million. The centre officially opened the following year. Malo Ioane Luafutu, also called Jeshua Ioane Luafutu (born on 29 May 1979), and better known by his stage name Scribe, is a New Zealand rapper of Samoans, Samoan descent. He achieved two solo number ones on the singles chart from his debut album, ''The Crusader (album), The Crusader'', which was released in 2003 in New Zealand and later certified four times platinum. Evermore are a band originally from Feilding, New Zealand, now based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The band consists of brothers Jon (guitar, vocals, album production), Peter (keyboards, bass, vocals) and Dann Hume (drums, guitar, vocals). Dan Papirany Trio
Dan Papirany (born March 7, 1967) is an Israeli-born jazz pianist, drummer, composer and music teacher. He works solo, in duos or as leader of his own trio. Papirany started performing in Wellington, New Zealand in 1995 and has been based in Queensland, Australia since 2011. Biography Dan Papirany was born on March 7, 1967, in Israel and lived in Tel Aviv. During his teens he was inspired by Phil Collins' work in the jazz fusion group, Brand X and took drum lessons. In 1995, while a post-graduate student at Massey University in Wellington, Papirany, on piano, formed a jazz trio, which played in local venues such as Bar Bodega. He had studied drums for two years but switched to piano, he also became a secondary school music teacher. Jonathan Lemalu
Jonathan Fa'afetai Lemalu (born 1976) is a New Zealand bass baritone opera singer. Born to Samoan parents who had emigrated to New Zealand, he was educated in Dunedin. His first singing teacher was Honor McKellar, who began teaching him while he attended Otago Boys' High School. He studied both Law and Music at the University of Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1999. Lemalu studied at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he won the college's gold medal award in 2002. He won the prestigious London-based Kathleen Ferrier Award (previously won by Malvina Major in 1966) that same year. He was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist from 2002 to 2004. Douglas Lilburn
Douglas Gordon Lilburn (2 November 19156 June 2001) was a New Zealand composer. Early life Lilburn was born in Whanganui and spent his early years on the family sheep farm in the upper Turakina River valley at Drysdale. He attended Waitaki Boys' High School from 1930 to 1933, before moving to Christchurch to study journalism and music over the next three years at Canterbury University College, then part of the University of New Zealand. In 1936 his career in music was set when his tone poem ''Forest'' won visiting composer Percy Grainger's national composition competition. In 1937 he began studying at the Royal College of Music in London, tutored in composition by Ralph Vaughan Williams until 1939. The two men remained close: in later years Lilburn sent Vaughan Williams gifts of New Zealand honey, knowing that the older man was fond of it. SJD, or Sean James Donnelly, is a musician from Auckland, New Zealand. His music is a mix of pop-rock, soul, and electronic music. The name SJD also refers to Donnelly's touring band when not performing solo. History Donnelly has cited influences including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Gary Numan, the Human League and Soft Cell. Best Music Video is an Aotearoa Music Award that honours New Zealand artists for excellence in music video production. The award was first presented in 1983 and is given to the video director.
