2005 NPF Draft
The 2005 Senior College Player Selections was the second annual NPF player draft. It was held February 7, 2005 to assign division I college players to pro teams for 2005 season. The first selection was Southern Illinois' Amy Harre, picked by the expansion Chicago Bandits. Athletes are not allowed by the NCAA to sign professional contracts until their collegiate seasons have ended. The Arizona Heat made their selection in round 1, but passed on all their subsequent selections. Softball
Softball is a game similar to baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Softball is played competitively at club levels, the college level, and the professional level. The game was first created in 1887 in Chicago by George Hancock. There are two rule sets for softball generally: ''slow pitch softball'' and ''fastpitch''. Slow pitch softball is commonly played recreationally, while women's fastpitch softball is a Summer Olympic sport and is played professionally. Depending on the variety being played and the age and gender of the players, the particulars of field and equipment vary. Michigan Wolverines Softball
The Michigan Wolverines softball team represents the University of Michigan in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I competition. College softball became a varsity sport at the University of Michigan in 1978. Bonnie Tholl has been the head coach since 2023, following the retirement of longtime head coach Carol Hutchins. Jessica Merchant
Jessica Merchant (born 1983) is an American softball coach and former softball player. She is currently the associate head coach with the Stanford Cardinal softball team. She previously served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and UMass Minutemen and Minutewomen, UMass Minutewomen. She played professional softball in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league for the New England Riptide for three seasons, and for the Connecticut Brakettes for one season. While playing for the Brakettes in 2006, she was named NPF Offensive Player of the Year. Merchant also played college softball as a shortstop for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 2002 to 2005. The Arizona Wildcats softball team represents the University of Arizona in NCAA Division I Softball. Having claimed eight national championships (second only to UCLA), the team is one of the most successful in the history of the sport. The following is a list of National Pro Fastpitch players who have been selected for the All-NPF Team at least once in their careers. Each year's All-NPF Team recognizes players for excellence on the field during the season. Since 2006, the All-NPF Team has been selected by the league and announced during the awards banquet after the end of the regular season. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk.
